Benson estate donates land, stipulates museum be built
      There is a new museum on the horizon in Gulf Breeze. Eloise Benson - widow of the town's first postmaster, the late Mark Benson - recently died, and in her will donated their brick home and land that includes three small cottages to the Gulf Breeze Historical Society with the stipulation that a museum be established on the property.

      In the May 29 Gulf Breeze News, the amount of Community Redevelopment money spent on city roads to attract Andrews Institute was incorrectly reported. The figure was $1 million. Gulf Breeze News incorrectly reported the amount of Gulf Breeze High senior Joey Leonard's scholarship to Harper Junior College in Palantine, Ill. The correct figure was $33,600.

Coastal residents appear to be complacent
      On the heels of two mild storm seasons, Americans in Gulf and Atlantic coastal states are still complacent and unprepared for hurricanes according to a Mason-Dixon poll. The poll shows some residents of hurricane-vulnerable states say they will not evacuate and prefer to weather storms at home.

     Publix supermarket district manager Mark Pittman (right) gives a $13,000 check to executive director Guy Thompson of United Way of Santa Rosa County for their annual campaign. "We are blessed to have such a community-oriented partner in Publix," said Marianne Back, UWSRC community projects coordinator. "Local store manager Ed Betts serves on our board of directors, and we can always count on Publix volunteers to help with community projects like Cram the Van and Day of Caring."

State still offering free windstorm inspections
      With a goal of hardening homes in Florida, the state is offering free windstorm inspections to single-family residences in the Sunshine State. The State of Florida - through the My Safe Florida Home Program administered by CFO Alex Sink - is giving way 400,000 free windstorm inspections to people who own Florida single-family homes.

Gulf Breeze students measure up
      Gulf Breeze schools performed well above national averages on portions of the 2008 FCAT that were designed to compare academic performance to a nationwide sample of students. The Norm-Referenced Test (NRT) portion of the FCAT includes reading comprehension and mathematics problem solving.

      The Gulf Breeze Police Department and Escambia County Sheriff's Office teamed up Monday, June 2, to arrest a burglary suspect near the Harbourtown office and business complex in Gulf Breeze.

Mission to help Native Americans seeks donations
      Organizers led by George B. Dodge of Pensacola plan a mission trip later this month to Eagle Butte, S.D., to deliver relief supplies to impoverished Lakota Sioux Indians. Mission members have collected more than half of the desired amount of clothing, bedding, blankets, shoes and bedding needed for the humanitarian trip.

Union talks delay bus drivers' information
      Santa Rosa School District bus drivers have no idea what their paychecks might look like next school year. They were invited to attend a 'hiring event' last week with the new school bus company hired by the school district. There, they were asked to submit applications and undergo medical physicals and blood tests - without knowing how much they would be paid next year.

Navarre parents protest next year's school starting times
      Parents in Navarre don't like the idea of their 5-year-olds getting up for school at 5 a.m. A large group attended the May 22 Santa Rosa County School Board meeting to voice their displeasure with a change in school-day starting times scheduled for next school year.
