Behind ice cream, cherry Jello was next best thing

Anticipating a birthday visit from my second son and his wife, accompanied by my youngest son, I pondered a number of options for a suitable birthday celebration. Of course, there would have to be someplace interesting to have dinner, but what about afterward?

Dancing is not their style, and they probably have seen all the movies showing here already, up north. Nobody is the night-clubbing type, either. So, after dinner, what shall we do?

It used to be easy in their early days - a trip to the amusement park, with rides on the roller coaster or the Tilt-AWhirl or even, in their youngest years, the merry-go-round. And then, of course, it all ended up with ice cream and cake.

And, of course, I remember my own early birthdays. My mother loved to give parties, not just on birthdays but Halloweens and holidays, etc. But in those days, ice cream had to be bought at a drug store and carried home by hand, which in our case was much too far. So the alternative was cherry Jello with lots of whipped cream in a fancy sundae glass. That suited me fine. And there was often a huge white coconut layer cake. We always saved my Dad a piece.

Now that I am so old, the kids won't expect any brilliant ideas from me. Maybe I can use age as an excuse, but not too often, or they will think I am 'losing it.'

Maybe, just maybe, the answer is a check. How about a dollar for every year?

Hey, this is getting more expensive every year.

Here's some new advice from the Brookhaven National Laboratory with which I can heartily agree. The easiest and safest form of weight-bearing exercise is walking. The lab recommends that people with osteoporosis walk at a good pace twice a day - once in the morning to limber up, and again in the evening. They suggest starting with a fiveminute walk and working up to 20 minutes daily. Remember to wear well-constructed and supportive shoes. I love flipflops; they're so comfy, but they simply will not do for a good walk.

The Pensacola Historical Society invites you to attend a 75th Anniversary silver reception and tea Sunday, May 18.

Tea time is from 3 to 5 p.m. The location is 413 East Zaragossa Street in Pensacola.

Attendees are asked to bring silver coins to donate, continuing the tradition of the first Silver Tea in 1939, held to raise funds to benefit the Dorothy Walton house. The Historical Society's preservation efforts help keep Pensacola's story alive. For more information or to RSVP, call 434-5455.

Odd, but true . . .

You are about 1 centimeter taller in the morning than in the evening.

During your lifetime, you'll eat about 60,000 pounds of food - that's the weight of about 6 elephants.

See you next week - taller, but hopefully, not fatter.
