Surfers rush to rescue struggling swimmers
      Two Gulf Breeze High students will have quite a story to tell this week as they return from Spring Break. A birthday party at the beach turned into much more when partygoers rescued a Georgia woman and her daughter from the Gulf of Mexico Sunday near the Fort Pickens gate.

Relive the '70s at this year's
      An outbreak of disco fever and the boogie woogie flu is predicted for Friday, April 25 as the Pensacola Beach Optimist Club hosts its annual Beach Ball at the Hilton Pensacola Beach Gulf Front. Featuring the theme, "Fantasy Island, a visit to the 70s," the Beach Ball will again offer dinner, dancing and exciting opportunities to win $5,000 in cash and prizes at a drawing.

Migratory birds day is Saturday
      Gulf Islands National Seashore will host an International Migratory Bird Day program from 8 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 12 at the Naval Live Oaks Visitor Center. Lynn Ogden, an environmental educator, ornithologist and Adjunct Professor of Biology at PJC, will give an introduction to birding and binoculars on the deck behind the visitor center.

Vacationers pack the beach
      On Thursday, spring breakers were soaking up rays on the Quietwater Beach. Santa Rosa Island Authority Executive Director Buck Lee said the spotty weather didn't deter many people from enjoying the beach. "There were a lot of people out," Lee said, adding that many anglers were catching pompano from the Gulf pier.

Fish Sandwich set to open
      A new restaurant is poised to open on Pensacola Beach at the base of the Gulf Pier. The restaurant should be open this weekend, serving casual fare for beachgoers and pier patrons in a covered outdoor pavilion featuring picnic tables.

Relay for life auction Saturday at the Elks Lodge
      Everyone is invited to attend a free Relay for Life auction April 12 at the Pensacola Beach Elks Lodge. The event is designed to increase the fundraising for each team participating in the Gulf Breeze Relay for Life. T. Bubba Bechtol will emcee the event, and tickets will be available for just $10 each for a dinner catered by Shane's Rib Shack.
