Local child battles rare cancer
      St. Ann Discovery School student Lindsey Adams, 3, recently underwent surgery for bilateral retinoblastoma, a rare disease of the eye. To receive treatment, she had to travel to Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami to Dr. Timothy Murray, a specialist in this disease.

Car reported stolen
      Astolen vehicle was reported on Jan. 14 on the 100 block Gilmore Drive. The vehicle, a 2007 beige Lincoln town car, had been parked in the driveway of the victim at approximately 11p.m. the evening prior, at which time the victim's son had gone out to the car, locked the doors and set the alarm.

Condiment burglar strikes again
      The condiment burglar was at it again last week, but this time he allegedly made off with credit cards and a vehicle instead of a handful of ketchup packets, sheriff's documents said. Jereb Shane Johnson, 21, of Gulf Breeze was arrested on Jan. 7 on charges of third degree vehicular theft, credit card fraud, failure to appear in court for a felony charge and larceny.

GBPD honors employee, volunteer and officer of the year
      The Gulf Breeze Police Department (GBPD) recently honored three of its own with annual awards. The department recently announced recipients for the employee, officer and volunteer of the year awards for 2007. Dispatcher Steve Larcher, Officer Chris Henderson and volunteer Donald Shopmeyer were all recognized for their achievements.

      The Perfectly Aged Calendar is back for 2009 and with a new twist. The public is being invited to nominate potential calendar models in the "60-ish plus" age range. Nominators are requested to include a brief description of why they think their nominee should be considered along with the contact information of the nominee and nominator.

It's a wild world in Gulf Breeze
     Photo courtesy of Linda Bills Shirley Left: This unfortunate octopus is said to have washed up behind Charlie Bassett's home on Bay Cliffs Circle. Glenn Butts, and environmental specialist with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection said octopi are more common in Pensacola Bay near Pensacola Pass. "They like high salinity," Butts said.

GB arts festival coming in March
      Nancy Fish, a commercial graphic artist, won the $250 prize for the best logo entry in the tee shirt/poster contest that will represent the 14th annual 2008 Fine Arts Festival in Gulf Breeze. Fish said herons and other area aquatic birds inspired her entry's theme while traveling in and around Gulf Breeze.
