Santa Rosa Shores kicks off holiday season
The Santa Rosa Shores Women's Club (SRSWC) and the Santa Rosa Shores Homeowners' Association (SRSHA) sponsor what is becoming a great annual event for the community known as Santa Claus in Swenson Park.
This year it was held on Tues. Dec. 11 beginning at 6:30 p.m. Santa Claus arrived at 7 p.m. on his beautiful sleigh accompanied by his helpers. The flashing lights of a fire truck and several vehicles led Santa to the right place. He had cookies, apple cider, cocoa and coffee waiting for him to share with the families. Local families and kids lined up to talk to Santa. Children had an opportunity to tell him what they want for Christmas. The kids were very excited and some whispered their requests in Santa's ear. Santa Rosa County Sheriff Wendell Hall and County Commissioner John Broxson were both there to greet Santa as well.
The development of Swenson Park, located in Santa Rosa Shores, is one of the projects the SRSWC and SRSHA worked on together to make the event a reality.
"We have come a long way since Hurricane Ivan thanks to everyone coming together, hard work and our Lord," said Margaret Cunningham. SRSHA meets monthly at the Midway Fire District offices on College Boulevard and quarterly at the Community Life Center. SRSWC meets on the second Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. in a member's home.

The ceremony began with welcome remarks from Dr. Robert Harriman, administrator of Gulf Breeze Hospital/Andrews Institute, and Gulf Breeze Mayor Lane Gilchrist. Jerry Blacklaw, pastor of Gulf Breeze Presbyterian Church, gave the opening prayer. The Gulf Breeze Elementary School fifth grade chorus, with Dottie Castleberry directing, and the Gulf Breeze High School jazz band, with Neal McLeod directing, provided the evening's entertainment.

Auxiliary President Averette Mull spoke about the goals and purpose of the organization. She then accepted the checks for donation from area women's club representatives: Jane Arnott with Gulf Coast Friends, Jane McGrath with Pensacola Beach Woman's Club, Janis Fort with Emerald Coast Woman's Club and Wendy Brandon and Santa Rosa Woman's Club. Pensacola Junior College's Director of College Advancement, Meredith Wolf, announced the scholarship recipients, Susan Sadler and Arlene Flores. The recipients who were unable to attend the event sent poignant letters of appreciation.
On a signal from Dr. Harriman the Tree of Lights lit dramatically and shone beautifully over the hospital grounds as a special signal to members of the Gulf Breeze Hospital family and the community. Following the tree lighting Blacklaw gave seasonal remarks, all in attendance sang "Silent Night," and refreshments were served in the lobby.
Each year during the holiday season anyone may recognize someone or some group for a minimum donation of $5. The name of the person or group recognized appears in the Book of Honor displayed in the hospital lobby and a card is sent notifying them of the memorial.
Emerald Coast Woman's Club
The Emerald Coast Woman's Club (ECWC) will host an evening with guest speaker, Glenn Frazier, a veteran of World War II. Frazier will speak to the audience of his experiences and then hold a question and answer session. He was a prisoner of war for three years in the Philippines and Japan, and a survivor of the Bataan death march. Frazier appears prominently on the recent Ken Burns PBS documentary, "The War," and is the father of the current ECWC president, Janis Fort. This event will take place Friday, Jan. 11 at 6 p.m. at Sound Side, Hurlburt Field. Tickets are $15 to ECWC members and their guests and $25 to non-members. Tickets are limited to 200. There will also be heavy hors d'oevres and a cash bar.
Frazier's story is one of human endurance, spirit and courage, and is only one of many such stories to come out of World War II. He has written a book entitled "Hell's Guest" and a raffle will be held for an autographed copy. A biography of Glenn can be found at www.pbs.org/thewar/detail517 1.htm. This meeting will present an opportunity to meet and listen to a man that truly represents the heart and soul of America's greatest generation. For more information and tickets contact Janis Fort at 850-930-3972.
