GBHS in Akers Tourney this weekend The Lady Dolphins' biggest test to date will come this weekend at the Michelle Akers Classic in Orlando. Gulf Breeze is one of 16 teams in the field. The following is a capsule of each of the teams in the tournament (GBHS is in Group D): Group A Lake Mary (6A) - Lake Mary has six state tournament appearances since 1998, with two state runners up and two state championships. They lost in the semifinals last year, finishing with a 20-2-2 record. Deland (6A) - Deland was the 4A state runners up in 2001. Orangewood Christian (2A) - OCHS was the state runner up in 2006 and a state semifinalist in 07, losing to American Heritage both times. Boca Raton (6A) - Boca Raton's streak of 17 consecutive playoff berths was snapped in in 2006. They lost in the first round in 2007. Group B Lyman (6A) - Lyman's won four state titles, the last of which was in 1994 (also their last postseason appearance). Reason could be belonging in the same district as fellow tournament competitors Lake Mary, Lake Brantley, Oveido and Winter Springs. Edgewater (6A) - The 6A state runners up in 2005, Edgewater lost to Lake Mary in last year's regional final. They finished last year 23-4-2. Lake Howell (5A) - Like GBHS, Lake Howell won back to back state titles in 2000 (4A) and 2001 (3A). They lost in the first round in 2007. Nease (4A) - Nease has won three state championships since 2002, the first of them coming against Gulf Breeze. They lost in the second round to eventual champion Bishop Moore in 2007. Group C Lake Brantley (6A) - Lake Brantley has one state championship (1990) and hasn't made the playoffs since 2002. Winter Park (6A) - A state semifinalist in 2004, Winter Park lost to Lake Mary in the first round in 2007. Lake Highland (3A) - Lake Highland has played for a state title each of the last three years, winning it in 2006. Oveido (6A) - Oveido has been a regional finalist three times since 1996. Group D Winter Springs (6A) - Winter Springs has been to the playoffs five times since 1998, making the regional semifinals twice. Hagerty (5A) - A third year school, their coach Jay Getty led Oveido to the regional final in 2000. Gulf Breeze (4A) - GBHS has six state tournament appearances, two state runner ups and two state titles since 1999. They lost to Bishop Moore in last year's 4A final. Bishop Moore (4A) - Bishop Moore has been to the playoffs 17 of the last 18 years. They have been to state 10 times and have won five state titles, including last year's 4A crown. Gulf Breeze will meet Bishop Moore in a rematch of last year's title game Friday at 7 p.m. Eastern Time. They'll play Winter Springs at 9 a.m. Eastern Saturday and Hagerty at 5 p.m. Eastern. The winners of each group will play Dec. 21-22. |
