Atzhorn qualifies for Olympic Trials
. Season starts for Rhodes' Tryon

(GBHS c/'06) took second place in the 200 meter individuamedley at the University of Alabama Classic Friday.

His time of 2:06.59 also qualified him for next summer's U.S. Olympic Trials in Omaha, Neb. His time was almost a full second ahead of the qualifying time of 2:07.39.

It was a busy weekend in Tuscaloosa for Atzhorn, who placed in eight other events.

He was also second in the 400 meter individual medley (4:34.54), improving his prelim place by three in both events.

In the 400 yard freestyle relay, Atzhorn was the lead leg on USC's squad that was second (3:31.10).

He was the anchor leg on USC's fourth place finish in the 800 meter freestyle relay (8:01.55) and was the second leg on the Gamecocks' sixth place 400 meter medley relay team (4:03.73).

He was the lead leg on USC's sixth place finish in the 200 yard freestyle relay (1:26.15) and was the lead leg on the Gamecocks' sixth place finish in the 200 yard medley relay (1:35.87).

Atzhorn was also ninth in the 200 meter backstroke (2:08.8) and was 12th in the 100 meter backstroke (1:01.89) after qualifying 15th in that event.

South Carolina was third at the meet behind host Alabama and Florida. Auburn was fourth.

Doug Baldwin (c/o '07) had a busy day for Stanford in their 20-13 win over Cal Saturday.

Baldwin had a run of three yards, two catches for 20 yards and two kickoff returns totalling 36 yards.

One of his two kickoff returns led to the Cardinal's first touchdown and the other a field goal. One of his receptions led to another field goal.

Baldwin played in all 12 games for the Cardinal, amassing 669 all-purpose yards - with 555 of those yards coming on kick returns. His 24.1 yard kickoff return average was fifth best in the Pac-10 and 60th nationwide (out of 100 with at least a 22 yard average or better).

He also caught 11 passes for 93 yards. Rhodes College sophomore Kim Tryon (c/o '06) opened her track and field season Saturday at the Arkansas State Kickoff Classic in Jonesboro, Ark. Tryon tied for sixth in the pole vault with a leap of 10 feet, six inches.

Fellow Rhodes student Kelly Helvenston (c/o '06) placed in four events, while helping her team to a third place finish (out of 11) at the 2007 DePauw Invitational in Greencastle, Ind. Friday and Saturday.

Helvenston was 10th in the 200 yard backstroke (2:25.08) and was 14th in the 100 yard backstroke (1:08.78).

She was also the lead leg in the 400 yard medley relay (4:30.31) and the second leg on Rhodes' 800 yard freestyle relay (9:00.77), both of whom finished 16th.

Auburn sophomore

Courtney Brown (c/o '06) took fifth in the 1-meter (197.5) and the 3-meter (170.6) competitions at the LSU Diving Invitational Saturday.

Morgan Tibbs (c/o '07) swam in five events for Florida Gulf Coast University last weekend, as FGCU took fourth (out of 16 teams) at the 14th annual Miami (of Ohio) University Invitational.

Tibbs swam in the 1,650 meter freestyle (18:49.31), the 200 yard butterfly (2:24.48), the 400 yard individual medley (5:02.84), the 500 yard freestyle (5:42.91) and the 100 yard butterfly (1:06.33).
