'97 Dolphin soccer team roars out of starting blocks

The 1997 Dolphin soccer team got off to a strong start this week, scoring 21 goals in three matches, all wins.

Ale Almeida, Beto Bressiani and Edegard Borges all scored goals in a 3-1 season opening win over Bay. Andrew Peck made four saves.

Borges added three goals, while Alemeida and Bressiani both had one in an 8-1 win over Fort Walton Beach. C.D. Harris and Matt Iburg both had one each, while Bressiani had two each. Nick Simpson also had two helpers, while Harris had one.

Peck had one save, while John Michael Martin had three.

Bressiani had four goals and two assists in a 10-0 win over Pine Forest. Borges had three goals and an assist, while Tyler Hartwig had two goals and Harris one and an assist.

1972 - Larry Shores took second place in a cross country meet at PJC, which the Dolphins won by one point (36-37 over PHS. Catholic had 47 points.

Tommy Pugh had 22 points, while Steve Elbert had 18 in a season opening 78-36 win over Pensacola Academy at PHS. The Dolphins shot 47 percent from the field, while holding PA under 20 percent.

Baker used a 22-10 third quarter to beat the Dolphins 64- 54 at UWF. David Napier had 19 points, while Pugh had 14.

1977 - The Dolphins got drilled by Choctaw 94-63 in their season opener. John English had 14 points, while Kevin Boggs had 12.

Boggs had 22 points in a 75- 52 win over Foley. English added 19 points, while Jimmy Watts had 10.

1982 - Suzanne Sharpe had 22 points, while Kelly Hippard had 20 in the Lady Dolphins' 68-26 season-opening win over Chumuckla. Tracey Givens added 10 for Gulf Breeze.

The Lady Dolphins rallied from 25 down, losing by only seven (47-40) to Foley. Sharpe had 11 points, while Debbie Neff had nine points and 10 rebounds.

The Dolphins lost to Tate 55- 46 in the final of the Fairhope Tournament. Ken Harley had 12 points, while Steve Gouner, who made the All Tournament team, added seven points.

Woody Johnson, Paul Villane, Tim Fleeman, Chris Brown and Mike Droogsma all made the All Area football team.

1987 - Clay Civula had 18 points as the Dolphins lost to Rutherford 39-36 in their season opener.

Venessa Rhodes scored 15 points as the Lady Dolphins scored the last 17 points of the game to beat Tate 55-36. Jennifer Wasson scored 21 points, while Kriss Embree added 15 as the Lady Dolphins beat Pace 67-53.

Victor Wright scored two goals, including the gamewinner with 15 minutes left as the Dolphins edged Woodham 2- 1. Gulf Breeze then defeated Catholic 3-0 on goals by Mike Della Ratta, Ryan Davenport and Robert Bruner. Andrew Trickey had eight saves in the win.

1992 - Crestview used a 14-5 second quarter in a 48-46 win over GBHS. David Satterwhite had 16 points in the loss, while Shannon Jeffries had 12 and Dave Gallagher 10.

Satterwhite added 25 points in the Dolphins 80-47 loss to eighth-ranked Woodham. GBHS fell to 1-3 on the season.

Jennifer Wasson had 11 points for Mobile College in a 69-66 loss at UWF. Former Lady Dolphin volleyball coach Irene Sissois had seven assists for UWF.

The boys soccer team lost to Washington 5-1 in their season opener.

Chasidy Fisher had eight points in the Lady Dolphins' 84-31 loss to Central. The Lady Jags outscored GBHS 52-15 in the second half.

1997 - Hollie Lee and Collete Overlade had goals in the Lady Dolphins' 2-1 season opening win over Washington. Nikki Matsoukas had six saves in the win.

The Dolphins got 18 points from Gary Wargo for their first win of the season, 71-53 over Central. Jimmy Everette and Brian Mink had 12 each.

Washington hit seven of 10 three-pointers to defeat the Dolphins 79-37. Everette had nine points in the loss.

The Lady Dolphins got 14 points from Julie Dease, nine from Cass Shields and eight from Bree Bolster in a 59-37 loss to Woodham. Shields had seven in an 84-24 loss to Washington.

2002 - The GBHS girls soccer team finished third, while the boys were tied for fifth in the Mediacom Tournament at the Pace Soccer Complex.

The Lady Dolphins lost to Gainesville Buchholz in penalty kicks before defeating Oak Grove (Miss.) 5-1 and Tallahassee Leon 4-0.

Lauren Pearcey had four goals in the three games, while Annie Adams had three. Shannon Wing and Brandi Adams had two goals and an assist, while Alisha Smith had a goal and two assists.

Jessica Van Slyke had four assists, while Laurin Parks and Chryssie Banfell had one each.

The boys lost to Buchholz 2-1 before beating PHS and Navarre by 8-0 and 7-0 scores. Kyle Baldasan had four goals, while Tyler Story had three goals and two assists.

Jordan Machesky had two goals and two assists, while Keith Savage had two goals. Ben Keane had a goal and two assists, while David Brown had one goal and one assist. Addie Salter and Zach Schang both scored once, while Heath Williamson had two assists and Montie Lewing, Mike Dichristina, Ronnie Johnson and Evan Brown one each.
