Gulf Breeze Rotary also donated $557 to Chavez's fifth grade class for participating in the annual essay contest. After the students read their essays, Chavez thanked them for the opportunity to participate. "We have so much focus on the FCAT testing in our schools and it is a great opportunity to have morals-based lesson. I plan to conduct this Rotary Four Way Test essay challenge every year," he said. "Now that the bible is excluded from the classroom, the essay is one [way to] talk to these students about character." The Rotary Four Way Test essay contest is conducted annually, asking students to write a reflection on the four Rotary principles: "In things we think, say and do: Is it the truth? Is it fair to all concerned? Will it bring good will and better friendship? Will it be beneficial to all concerned?" |
