Midway Fire District needs to live within its means

Sorry, I can't afford a Mercedes.

The Midway Fire Department in South Santa Rosa County is probably the best fire department in the area. Our Fire Chief, Chief Demeter has worked hard to make sure we have excellent people, training, and the best equipment money can buy. The only problem is, I drive a Ford. I used to drive Chevrolets but this last time I bought a Ford. My Ford is also a bare bones model, no carpeting, leather, or electric windows.

I didn't buy a Ford because I don't like the feel and look of the Mercedes; I bought it because that's what I can afford. I have to live within my means.

The Midway Fire Department is a great department. My problem is I can't afford a Mercedes and that is what the fire department is costing me. I don't believe my neighbors can either. Our rates are based on the 1.4 percent millage rate we approved by vote several years ago. My problem is that $30 donation that I started with in the Midway area grew to $35. When we voted to go to the millage rate I paid $90 at the time, but our increases just keep growing. This year I will pay over $230.00. I believe enough is enough. I think it's about time to start living within our means again. The Santa Rosa County Commissioners' have set square footage rate for the other nine Fire Departments. The residential rates are $85 for a house up to 3,500 sq.ft. and $175 for house above 3,500 sq.ft. believe our Fire Department should be able to live within the means of the people of the Midway area on a budget like all the other departments in the county. It's time to vote out the millage rate and go back to the MBSU rates dictated by the County Commissioners. If not, can I borrow your Mercedes?
