The Gulf Breeze Lady Dolphin soccer team made coach Sharon Kerby's first match a memorable one as they rallied from a two goal deficit to beat Niceville 3-2 in a Preseason Classic Friday at Brosnaham Park.
The matchup featured two state tournament teams from a year ago - Gulf Breeze the 4A state runners up and Niceville a 5A state semifinalist. The Lady Eagles scored early in the first half and tacked on another before the second half water break.
Gulf Breeze got within a goal on a shot by Alyssa Smith outside the 18-yard box. Kristen Barona then tied it off a pass from Jessica Majewski before Barona scored the game-winner with seven minutes left. Smith was credited with the assist.
Anne Preston played the first half in goal, while Ashley Collins played the second half.

Majewski, whose shots hit the post several times Friday, didn't let that happen on Saturday, scoring three times and assisting on the fourth as Gulf Breeze blanked the Lady Vikings.
Majewski's first goal came 25 seconds into the match off a pass from Barona. Majewski made it 2-0 less than four minutes later, scoring off a pass from Noelle Robles.
Fort Walton's best scoring chance in the first half came in the 20th minute, but Aubrey Curington cleared the ball out of harm's way. Preston played the first 20 minutes, while Kathy Franklin played the final 20 minutes of the first half in goal, then the first 20 of the second half.
Preston didn't touch the ball at all during her time in goal, while Franklin made several saves. Collins played the final 20 minutes in goal.
Kerby made many substitutions in the second half. One of them, sophomore Heather Haney, scored less than a minute after being inserted into the lineup, putting away a pass from Majewski in the 60th minute.
Majewski completed the hat trick with a goal in the 66th minute off a pass from Smith.
The Lady Dolphins opened the regular season Wednesday against West Florida.
The following paragraph was omitted from the team preview that ran in the Oct. 25 issue. The News apologizes for the ommission: A former goalie herself, Kerby has three of them on this squad - seniors Kathy Franklin and Ashley Collins and sophomore Anne Preston. Collins is a first year varsity player.
