Lady Dolphin golf team state bound, boys' season ends

The Gulf Breeze Lady Dolphin golf team is hoping by the time they read this, they'll have made history.

The Lady Dolphins are one of 16 complete teams that competed in the 1A state golf tournament Tuesday and Wednesday at the Ridgewood Lakes Golf & Country Club in Davenport, Fla., having won their region on Oct. 23 in Tallahassee with a team score of 315.

Of the 16 teams, the 315 was tied for third best and one shot out of second. According to Navarre High Principal (and former Lady Dolphin golf coach) Bill Emerson, the highest ever state finish for the girls was fifth.

Sarah Hicks led Gulf Breeze at regionals with a three-over 75. Kristen Dorsey shot a 76, followed by Ashleigh Ryals

81), Angela Whidby (83) and Courtney Trevino (98).

Hicks, Dorsey and Ryals were second, third and fourth respectively. Catholic's Amanda de la Cruz was the low medalist with a 74.

GBHS finished 37 shots ahead of second place Catholic, which also qualified for state. Tallahassee Maclay (400), followed by Wakulla (424), Tallahassee North Florida Christian (428), West Florida (455), Arnold (463) and Freeport (501).

Boys sixth at regionals

The boys team finished sixth at regionals with a score of 351. Catholic won with a 299, followed by Walton (316), Wakulla and Maclay (323), Arnold (333), John Paul (353), South Walton

361) and West Florida (401).

GBHS teed off from the 10th tee on Tuesday, starting with Hicks at 9:30 a.m. Eastern Time, with nine minute intervals in between. Trevino led off Wednesday's round, teeing off at 8:45 a.m. Eastern Time.
