GBHS, Patriots win close games

The Dolphin football team and Pace both had close wins over the other on this week's installment of Back in Time.

This week 25 years ago, the Dolphins beat Pace 25-22 on Homecoming Night, while the 1992 Pace Patriots, led by FSU quarterback to be Thad Busby, edged the Dolphins 14-10.

1972 - A missed extra point would prove to be costly as the Dolphins lost to Walton 7-6.

Ken Johnson's 10-yard touchdown pass to David Napier gave the Dolphins a 6-0 lead in the first quarter.

1977 - Gulf Breeze racked up 501 yards in total offense as they obliterated Pace 53-6.

Tim Koontz had a pair of first quarter touchdowns, while Richard Hardy had a second quarter touchdown run and a 25- yard interception return for a touchdown in the fourth quarter.

Jimmy Watts had a 55-yard punt return for a touchdown with four seconds left in the first half.

Jay Mouser had a 13-yard touchdown catch from Donnie Brown, while Jimmy Rich scored from nine yards out. Ricky Gornall scored on a 50- yard pass from Jody Brown on the final play of the game.

Craig Wyrosdick scored on a three yard run that pulled the Patriots within 7-6.

1982 - Tommy Nash's fiveyard touchdown pass to Scott Pierson with 1:26 left in the game gave the Dolphins the win.

Dennis Mix's fumble recovery set up a one-yard run by Nash in the second quarter. Woody Johnston's three-yard pass from Nash made it 12-7 before Nash's three-yard touchdown run made it 18-15 Dolphins late in the third quarter.

A recovered fumble on a Dolphin punt return led to a Pace score that made it 22-18 Patriots with six minutes left.

1987 - Gulf Breeze was shut out 12-0 by Pace, dropping them to 3-3 on the season.

1992 - Busby was 6-for-17 passing, but still found a way to lead the Patriots to a win over Gulf Breeze.

Bobby Clayton, who went 7- for-19 passing for 129 yards, threw a 12-yard touchdown to Shannon Jeffries with 5:02 left in the first half that tied the game at seven.

Drew O'Daniel intercepted a Busby pass to set up the drive.

Ryan Carter also had an interception, while Corey Kaplan's 26-yard field goal made it 10-7 Dolphins with 5:57 left in the third quarter.

1997 - The Woodham Titans used a Dolphin fumble, a blocked punt and an interception to score 19 first quarter points to beat Gulf Breeze 32-13.

Jason McKie, who had 96 yards rushing on 20 carries, scored on a four-yard run to pull the Dolphins within 19-13 in the third quarter. Tyler Haney had a 36-yard touchdown run for the 5-2 Dolphins.

2002 - The Patriots scored 28 points in the second quarter on their way to a 49- 0 win over the Dolphins.

The Lady Dolphin volleyball team beat Jay twice in Gulf Breeze. Holly Almony and Ashley Roberts both had four kills in the first match, while Lauren Thorp had eight kills and Kelsey Hagan had five in the second match. Chelsey Adams had five digs and Anna Pope three aces in the second match, while Cameron Pyle had seven assists in both matches.

The Lady Dolphin golf team, led by Chelsea Reynolds' 85, took third in the FCA Fall Classic. Lauren Doston carded a 94, followed by Ashley Offerdahl (109), Kline Dreadin (127) and Locke Provost (128).

The boys team were sixth, led by Trey Carraway's 80. Justin Mahaney and Matt Greene both shot 83s, followed by Chris Pinney (85) and Mike Pierce (87).

The boys cross country team won a five-team meet in Pace and the girls took third.
