McKie gives '97 team 38-35 four overtime win

The 1997 Dolphins got a oneyard run by current Chicago Bears fullback Jason McKie to win a 38-35, four overtime marathon against Escambia this week 10 years ago.

McKie scored twice in the game, including a 71-yarder in the first quarter. Andy Rountree threw two touchdowns in the win - a 56-yarder to David Miller in the fourth quarter and another to Miller in the second overtime.

Miller scored three times in the game, including a 10-yarder in the third overtime. Ian Reeder kicked two field goals, including a 24-yarder in the first overtime. Escambia kicked an 18- yard field goal as time expired in regulation, tying the game at 15. Also this week in Dolphin Sports History:

1972 - The Dolphins gave up 455 yards of total offense in a 28-0 loss to Baker out of Mobile. The Dolphins fell to 0- 5 on the year.

1977 - The Dolphins ran up 416 yards of total offense - 161 of them (and two touchdowns) from Tim Koontz - as they celebrated Homecoming with a 36- 19 win over Walton.

Jimmy Rich scored from five yards out, while Donnie Brown completed the two-point pass to David Davidson. Brown also scored a two-point conversion in the win, while Rich Hardy's five-yard touchdown capped the scoring. Jay Mouser added an eight-yard touchdown run.

1982 - The area's top receiving trio (Woody Johnston, Scott Pierson and Kevin Wilkie) would not be enough to beat the Milton Panthers, who beat Gulf Breeze 20-14.

1987 - The '87 Dolphins were idle this week, but the Gulf Breeze Pee Wees (13-0 over Myrtle Grove) and Midgets (24-20 over Salvation Army) were winners. The Mighty Mites lost to Myrtle Grove 25-0.

1992 - The Dolphins lost 16- 13 at Marianna to fall to 3-2 on the season.

1997 - The girls cross country team, behind Kristen Kelly (third - 19:34) and Erin McGee (sixth - 19:52), took third at the Blackcat Invitational. Chris Fussell was eighth (16:59) for the Dolphins, who finished fourth.

2002 - Gulf Breeze resident Buck Showalter was hired as the manager of the Texas Rangers. It was his third managerial post after spending four years with the New York Yankees and three with the Arizona Diamondbacks.

In a battle of winless teams, Washington beat Gulf Breeze 28-3. Chase Griffin's 42-yard field goal accounted for the lone Dolphin points.

The Lady Dolphin volleyball team fell to 14-4 on the season after three game losses to both Escambia and Pace. Kalyn Hundley had four kills in the Pace loss.

The girls golf team, behind Chelsea Reynolds' 44, took second in a three team match at Hidden Creek. Lauren Doston had a 48, followed by Locke Provost (58) and Ashley Offerdahl (62).
