Lady Dolphins crush Washington
GBHS to host district tournament, could be top seed with win at Navarre Tuesday
BY JASON THOMPSON Gulf Breeze News jason@gulfbreezenews.com

Jason Thompson/Gulf Breeze News Hey, I know you Tobie Bass (right) and the Lady Dolphins beat Lauren Michaels and PHS in three games Thursday in Gulf Breeze. Both of them work at Sidelines on Pensacola Beach.
The Gulf Breeze Lady Dolphin volleyball team showed their season opening win over Washington - their first in their previous four meetings - was no fluke as they traveled to Pensacola Sept. 25 and hammered the Lady Cats 25-12, 25-22, 25-17.

That win, coupled with Washington's win over Navarre last week, leaves the door open for the Lady Dolphins to clinch the top seed in the district tournament, which Gulf Breeze will host, starting October 22. The Lady Dolphins would have to win their final four district matches, including one at Navarre Tuesday.

Tristan Powers, who had a career high 31 assists, scored five straight points on serve to take an 8-2 lead in game one. Washington got no closer than five in the game as Gulf Breeze committed only four hitting errors and four passing errors in the opening game.

The Lady Cats, the two-time defending district champs, hung tough in game two as a kill put them up 19-18. But a kill from Tobie Bass, followed by four serves from freshman Lauren Alverson put the game away. A kill by Lacie Brothers, one of a career-high 11, ended the game.

Gulf Breeze had to overcome four service errors in game two to win. In game three, they had only two as strong serving from both Brothers and Powers propelled them to the three-game sweep.

Deannette Zuniga had a career-high 21 digs for Gulf Breeze, the fourth straight match she's set a new personal best. Brittany Wheeler also had a career-high in kills with 12, while Celia Eddy led the team with 14 kills. She also had four blocks and three aces. Powers, Alverson and Milam all had six digs on defense.
