GBN sports unveils new weekly feature For those of you over the age of 22 or so (at least in my warped mind), you look at my section of the Gulf Breeze News and think 'where were you guys when I was in school?'Well, I have found a solution - at least the best one I can come up with. This week in the sports pages of the Gulf Breeze News, we introduce a new feature called 'This Day in Dolphin History.' Starting in 2002 and working back every five years to 1972, we'll take a trip down memory lane to see how the Dolphins and Dolphin athletes fared on this particular week in history. I'll go ahead and apologize now to any former female athletes who may be offended by our revealing a ballpark figure of your ages in this feature. So, strap yourselves in. On this date week in Dolphin History: 1972 - The Dolphin football team was held to only 14 yards rushing in a 28-0 loss to Robertsdale. 1977 - The Dolphins, despite fumbling four times, stayed unbeaten with a 19-0 win over Century. Donnie Brown threw a 47-yard pass to Jimmy Watts, then threw a two-point conversion pass to Rodney Eddins. Tim Koontz, who had 83 yards rushing on 17 carries, added a three-yard touchdown run after David Davidson recovered a Blackcat fumble. Jody Brown intercepted a pass that led to a 35-yard field goal by Richard Hardy. 1982 - A 21-for-37, 229-yard throwing performance by Tommy Nash would not be enough for the Dolphins, who lost to fifthranked Crestview 38-20. The Dolphins were held to 18 yards rushing in the first half and trailed 26-12. 1987 - Former Dolphin standout Doug Hudson, who would go on to be a seventh-round draft pick of the Kansas City Chiefs, said he would not become a NFLreplacement player, saying it 'wouldn't be right.' His former squad got a twoyard run from Warren Hall in overtime as the Dolphins edged Poplarville, Miss. 6-0. Hall finished with 191 yards rushing on 27 carries. The Lady Dolphin volleyball team opened the season with a 15-4, 15-1 loss to Jay. 1992 - The Dolphins lost 19- 7 to UMS-Wright. Sophomore Jennifer Hanley finished third in her class at the UWF Argo Cross Country Invitational with a time of 14:06. Fellow sophomore Maureen McAuliffe was sixth (14:41). The Gulf Breeze U-16 soccer team got goals from David Herron and Rob Mitchell to defeat Lafreniere 2-0 in the final of the Emerald Coast Classic in Fort Walton Beach. Herron had three goals in the tournament, while Jonathon Tresch and Tommy Sweeney had two each and Mitchell one. 1997 - The Dolphins led fourth-ranked in Alabama's Class 4AW.S. Neal 12-7 after three quarters before the Eagles got an 80-yard touchdown run en route to a 22-12 win. As an aside, if memory serves me correct, I walked into the stadium in the final minute of the game (after covering the T.R. Miller game as a sports writer for the Flomaton Tri City Ledger), where W.S. Neal was throwing for the end zone (up 10 points). Probably why the Dolphins don't play them anymore. Angela Fowler had 10 points on serve as the volleyball team improved to 5-6 with a close two-game win over Woodham. The Lady Dolphin cross country team won a three-team meet with Milton and Pensacola Christian as Erin McGee (21:16), Laura Kelly (22:17), Jessica Villella (22:20) and Kiersten Lynch (22:40) finished 2-3-4-5. Chris Fussell was the overall winner for the boys, who finished second to PCA. 2002 - Daniel Kostic scored two touchdowns, while Buddy Burks threw touchdown passes to Tyler Teston and Chad Edmondson, but the Dolphins fell short in a 36-29 loss to Woodham. Chase Griffin added a field goal in the loss. The volleyball team got four kills from Kalyn Hundley, four assists from Cameron Pyle and six digs from Chelsey Adams as the Lady Dolphins edged Navarre in two games to improve to 8-1 on the season. Both cross country teams took second place in a meet at UWF. Jeff Crane was the overall winner on the boys side (18:17), while Cecily Welsh (22:20) and Jenny Miller (22:45) were third and fourth respectively for the girls. |
