Letters to the Editor
There's more to running a zoo than marketing

I read with interest the letter from Matt Guthrie dated 9/13/07 criticizing how the Zoo is run. Sure, the Zoo may have some problems, but that in no way qualifies a 23-year-old with poor grammar to take over as director. What Matt may not realize is how much more is involved with running a Zoo than just marketing. kudos to him for wanting to help, but why doesn't he focus on areas in which he is qualified to help out rather than writing letters to the editor requesting that he be made director of the Zoo? People all over the country are running zoos and doing their best with limited resources. Perhaps if this young man is willing to donate his "expertise" for awhile and show the Zoo some results, they might consider paying him for his consulting services later on. It's so easy to criticize and suggest more marketing - why not do some real good and find out the actual needs of the Zoo? I'm sure if he offered his help (pro bono) to those actually involved with the Zoo they would welcome his support and any fresh ideas he might be able to bring in and help implement.

Amy Boam Fresno, Calif. Insurance will never change

Just read your editorial of August 23rd, and you are right on target.

State Farm is at it again as well, planning to cancel 50,000 policies after this hurricane season primarily in coastal areas. The Orlando Sentinel has a great article on it.

They will never change, and we are fortunate to have won our case so convincingly. We pray that the courts will do the right thing and help out the homeowners.

The insurance industry is awash in cash, and the methods used to hammer out settlements by those who couldn't financially afford to hang on were despicable. Unfortunately for them we could hang on, and did.

The legislature changed the law the last day of the session in 2005, skunky enough, but if the courts rule that Mierzwa isn't valid anymore, it will be a tragedy for many families.

Insurance companies callously have disregarded doing the right thing, and I submit that the advertising I have seen the last three years on television for numerous sporting events and programs would have easily paid off every claim in the state.

Shame, shame, shame on them.

Thanks for the support

On behalf of Gulf Breeze Sertoma, I want to thank you for the terrific media support of our recent Family Fishing Rodeo on 25 - 26 August. Thanks to media support from yourself and other local media, we had our most successful annual fundraiser event. We hope to count on you again for support next year.

Participants can go to our website, www.gulfbreezesertoma. com, and see pictures of all the entrants who weighed a fish and the final results for all the fish categories. Visitors can click on the picture and download it for their family to enjoy. When you look at the pictures of the entrants, you can easily see why this is such a good event to sponsor as it brings pride, joy and family togetherness into one event. Please visit the site and get your picture for a keepsake.

Again, thank you and we look forward to seeing you next year.

Postal worker improves

I would like to thank everyone for the loving kindness that was shown to our fellow postal employee. As you know, (Gulf Breeze Postal Carrier) Anna Johnson fell ill on July 13 with a brain aneurysm. She was in a coma in the intensive care unit at Birmingham Hospital.

However, due to your prayers, heartfelt giving and sincere concern she is improving. Anna is coming out of the coma. She is opening her eyes and has returned to Pensacola Health Care to continue her rehabilitation.

Once again, thank you for your unselfish support and generous donations. A very special thanks to the Grand Pointe subdivision and the Gulf Breeze News.

Please continue to keep Anna in your prayers.
