Celebrate 'Halfway to St. Patrick's Day'

St. Patrick is expected to make an appearance at Paddy O' Leary's "Halfway to St. Patrick's Day" celebration Sept. 22.
Bummed out by summer nearing an end? Take a trip down to Paddy O' Leary's on Pensacola Beach Sept. 22 for their "Halfway to St. Patrick's Day" celebration. The night of Irish-themed shenanigans will feature musical act Dublin Green at 7:30 p.m. followed by Duel Christian. The bar will be serving authentic Irish fare such as corned beef and cabbage. St. Patrick is expected to make an appearance along with a reenactment of Finnegan's Wake. Paddy's will have lots of great giveaways, too, so come by around 7 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 22 to quaff a pint of Guinness and pay homage to the Emerald Isle at Paddy O'Leary's Irish Pub, across from the Marriott Springhill Suites on Via de Luna Drive, Pensacola Beach. Seafood Festival this weekend

The Fiesta of Five Flags Association invites one and all to the 30th Annual Pensacola Seafood Festival, Sept. 21-23 in the Seville Square area of historic downtown Pensacola.

Eighteen food vendors, will cook up a wide assortment of traditional and gourmet selections. Choices include fried shrimp, scallops, grouper, oysters, alligator skewers and a local favorite, mullet. Another popular event, the Seafood Grille, coordinated by Energy Services of Pensacola, will be located at the south end of Seville Square. Follow the aroma of delicious seafood and enjoy acclaimed area chefs demonstrating the preparation of fresh seafood dishes. You may purchase the special edition cookbook featuring the demonstrated recipes throughout the weekend.

Treasure ship presentation in Fort Walton Beach

The Emerald Coast Archaeology Society presents a breathtaking video entitled: "Journey Into the Underwater World of Archaeology."

Join the society and visit the remains of the S.S. Republic, a Civil War ship sunk during a hurricane in 1865. See the amazing cargo of gold and artifacts the ship holds in her watery grave.

During the Civil War the S.S. Republic saw action in both the Confederate and Union Navies. Damaged in the war, she was acquired by a New York shipping magnate who renamed her.

Learn the rest of her story and what happened to her passengers and a fortune in gold and silver coins on that final voyage. The presentation is Saturday, Sept 22 at 1 p.m., at the Indian Temple Mound Museum, 139 Miracle Strip Parkway, Fort Walton Beach, Fla.

Nosh hosts UWF chef competition

As part of the University of West Florida's 40th Anniversary Celebration, the Argo Chef Competition will be held Sept. 26 from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at nosh, located inside the Andrews Institute at 1040 Gulf Breeze Pkwy. Tickets cost $45 per person. Proceeds will benefit the UWF Hospitality, Recreation and Resort Management program. Prior to the competition, wine and hors d'oeuvres will be served by UWF students. A silent auction will be held at the conclusion of the competition. Seating is limited.

UWF celebrates 40 year anniversary

As part of the University of West Florida's 40th Anniversary Celebration, the UWF music and theatre departments will present its Third Annual Concert Showcase Sept. 28 at 7:30 p.m. in the Mainstage Theatre in the Center for Fine and Performing Arts, Building 82. This showcase will feature the talents of students and faculty of the UWF music and theatre departments in styles varying from jazz to classical, serious to comical and 100 piece ensembles to intimate solo performances. The event is free and open to the public. Reservations are recommended.

This year's event will feature the world premiere of "Windward," a new piece by Joseph Spaniola, new assistant professor and director of jazz studies at UWF. Spaniola composed the piece as a celebration of UWF's 40th Anniversary and its ongoing commitment to excellence.

The Concert Showcase, sponsored in part by Dollarhide's Music Center and Pensacola Symphony Orchestra, serves as the culminating event in UWF's week long 40th Anniversary Celebration. For more information about the 40th Anniversary Celebration, visit uwf.edu/40years.
