Gulf Breeze Rotary Club The Rotary Club meetings are entertaining with Jim Reeves, AKA "Mr. Sunshine," acting as master of ceremonies and continue to offer interesting programs on issues and topics that truly affect all of the community on a daily basis. Recent programs include presentations by Judge David Langham, who is in charge of the Workers Compensation System in Florida. Langham, who was appointed by Jeb Bush and now serves at the pleasure of Governor Charlie Crist, was quest speaker on Aug. 7. Langham oversees approximately 225 people who mediate contested worker compensation issues, which number approximately 82,000 per year. Langham has been able to streamline the system to make it more efficient and fairer for all involved. He gave an overview of the process from claim to final decision and the reasons for some of the bottlenecks. The system does not cost the taxpayers of Florida a dime in taxes. However, the business owners essentially pay to provide coverage and oversight of the system. Indirectly, the consumers pay in higher costs per item or service as the rates go up. The fees are passed on to the consumer. Fortunately, the fees have been reduced and the backlog of cases in the pipeline is diminishing. Langham is committed to making the system more efficient and fair.
