Local quarterbacks making their way in college
Savage moving up in the UWF record books

Three local quarterbacks haven been impressing their college coaches as their season began last weekend.

Brad McGuire, a 2007 GBHS graduate, will be redshirted this season at Louisiana Lafayette, according to the school's sports information department.

McGuire, who completed 67 percent of his passes as a senior and threw for 6,705 yards and 62 touchdowns in four years at Gulf

Breeze, has three upperclassmen ahead of him, according to the school's SID department.

Louisiana Lafayette opened its season Saturday at South Carolina.

Jeff Van Camp, a Gulf Breeze resident and 2006 Navarre graduate, will be a redshirt freshman quarterback at Florida Atlantic University.

"Jeff has had a great preseason. Coaches are pleased with him," said Katrina McCormack,

FAU's Assistant Director of Media Relations.

She added that Van Camp has a senior and a sophomore ahead of him at quarterback.

Van Camp threw for 997 yards and five touchdowns his senior season at Navarre.

FAU kicked off its 2007 season against Sun-Belt co-champion Middle Tennessee State on Saturday.

Patrick Bryant, a Gulf Breeze resident and 2004 Catholic High graduate, has recently walked on the football team at Alabama.

Bryant spent three years in minor league baseball, the last with the Elizabethtown Twins. In 2006, Bryant went 0-1 with a 6.61 earned run average. He struck out 36 in 32 2.3 innings.

Doug Baldwin caught a long touchdown pass from Tavita Pritchard during the Stanford Cardinal's final practice before pads on August 9.

Stanford hosted UCLA in its season opener Saturday.

Cheney helps Cyclones to

division lead

Steven Cheney, a 2004 GBHS grad, has played a big part in the Brooklyn Cyclones to the McNamara division lead in the New York Penn League.

Cheney is 4-3 with the Cyclones, the Mets' Single-A affiliate. He's struck out 38 in 36 2/ 3 innings with a 2.39 earned run average. Opponents are batting only .210 against him.

Philip Bell, a 2004 GBHS grad, recently completed a summer with the Hyannis Mets of the Cape Cod League.

21. Bell batted .271 with a home run and 15 RBIs. He stole eight bases and made only one error the entire season.

Bell will be a senior this upcoming season, playing at the University of Alabama- Birmingham.

Savage-ly attacking the

record books

Keith Savage, a 2003 GBHS graduate, continues to move up the charts among the all time great soccer players at the University of West Florida.

Savage scored the lone goal in a 2-1 loss to Metro State on Aug. 24 and added a

hat trick in a 9-1 win over Georgia Southwestern on Aug. 26.

With his four goals this season, Savage now has 90 career points, passing former teammate Felipe Lawall for fourth on the school's all-time point list.

Brandi Adams, also a 2003 GBHS graduate, had a second half assist in UWF's 8-0 win over Georgia Southwestern on Aug. 26.

A starter once again

Jaime Hayes, a 2006 GBHS grad, is the starting setter for the volleyball team at St. Andrew's College.

After averaging 24 assists in her first four matches, Hayes had a career-high 40 assists in a 3-1 win over Barton College Aug. 28, their Coastal Carolinas Conference opener. She added 25 assists in a 3-0 win over Queens College the next day.

Together again

The sibling duo of Corie (c/o 2004) and Caitlin (c/o 2006) are entering their second season together as teammates on the Mount Olive volleyball team. Corie is a senior, Caitlin a sophomore.

Corie has 16 kills in Mount Olive's first four matches, while Caitlin has one. Both have played in the first 12 of Mount Olive's games this season.

New digs

After helping PJC's volleyball team win back to back conference championships, 2004 GBHS grad Chelsey Adams is now playing volleyball at Nicholls State.

In her first four matches, Adams has 18 kills and nine digs. Nicholls started out the season 1-3, including 3-0 losses to Auburn and Troy. Adams played in 13 of the team's first 16 games.
