The 2007 Dolphin football team is already young on paper in terms of experience. They'll be opening their season at Choctaw Friday shorthanded as well.

Coach Chris Nemith, entering his fifth year as head coach, will have a total of two healthy returning starters for tomorrow's game. Offensive lineman Scott Mitchell and defensive lineman Jacob Burks are the lone returning starters from last year, but Nemith's not concerned.

"They got a lot of confidence after the other night," said Nemith, referring to the varsity's scoreless tie in the second half of Friday's Kickoff Classic at Crestview (see related story). "They weren't intimidated. They weren't scared. They got some questions answered. They felt very, very good about themselves."

The Dolphins, who suffered their first losing season in Nemith's four-year tenure last year, were a little concerned Friday when the their starting quarterback Kyle Schnackenberg went down with a knee injury. Nemith said he's questionable for Friday's game.

"As a coach, you have to prepare for that," said Nemith, adding that sophomore Thomas Dorsey and freshman Michael Mann will split time Friday. Ben Lively will be the quarterback for the JV tonight against Choctaw.

Also sitting out Friday's game are offensive linemen Tyrone Covyeow (knee) and Kyle Magnes (shoulder), wide receiver/defensive back Shane Dorlag (knee) and defensive back Mike Tugwell (knee). Dorlag is questionable for the Choctaw game, while kicker Thomas Farmer is probable (knee).

"I want him back 100 percent," Nemith said of Schnackenberg, who after two years as the starting JV quarterback, is slated to succeed four year starter Brad McGuire, who signed with Louisiana Lafayette.

"We moved the ball pretty good when he's in there," Nemith said of Schnackenberg on Friday.

Senior Justin Hurd and junior Rhys Rinke will split time at fullback, along with junior Brandon Van Camp. Coveyow, a junior, is the team's right tackle, with senior Jacob Duggar at right guard. Andrew Quadrini, a junior, is the center, while junior Chaz Logan and Mitchell are at left guard and tackle, respectively.

Seniors Dane Baker and juniors Alex Duntz and Cody Warford will vie for the two wide receiver slots, while seniors Stuart Franklin, Shane Dorlag and Philip Hoffman and juniors Stephen Schmitz and Cuyler Snyder will vie for the slot receiver spot.

Burks returns to a defensive end spot and will be joined by junior Tam Nguyen. Senior Eric Agricola is the nose guard.

Juniors Jason Pendergraph and Brandon Van Camp will be the defensive ends/outside linebackers, depending on the situation. Mitchell, along with Logan and junior Sean Zaleski will back up the defensive tackles, while Hurd and Duntz will back up the D-ends.

Seniors Houston Chapman and Jimmy Beyers will be the inside linebackers, with juniors Taylor Retherford and E.J. Troup backing them up.

Senior Erik Mims and junior Jeff White will be the cornerbacks, with Zack Permenter at safety. Franklin and Dorlag are the backup corners, while Warford will back up Permenter at safety.

Senior Austin Santiago will handle the kicking duties, along with Farmer.

Franklin, Mims, Dorlag and White will be the punt and kick returners, while Snyder will handle all the snapping duties.

Seniors John Nieberlein and Anthony Kolokouris, along with juniors Wes Cross, Blake Conner, Jordan Scapecchi, J.R. Williams and Anthony Graham will handle the duties on punt and kickoffs and returns.

Greg Hundley will coach the varsity quartebacks and running backs, while Richard Hollensworth will handle the varsity and JV receivers. First year GBHS coach Bobby Young will handle the ninth grade and junior varsity offensive lines, while Brad Filbert, a Milton native and another new Dolphin coach, will handle the varsity, junior varsity and ninth grade defensive backs.

Mark Ransom will be the defensive coordinator, as well as working with all three secondaries. Randy Aydelott will coach the ninth grade receivers, as well as the varsity linebackers. He's also the ninth grade defensive coordinators.

Jak-y Kohr will coach the ninth grade and JV quarterbacks and fullbacks, as well as the ninth grade and ninth grade and JV linebackers. Filbert will run the JV defense and Hollensworth the JV offense.

The varsity offense is run by committee - Nemith will call the plays, Hollensworth will set up the formation, Young will signal the offensive line and Hundley will oversee it all from the press box, "keeping us on the same page," Nemith said.

What the Dolphins may lack in experience they make up for in team chemistry and camraderie. "They kid and play around, but they don't inpugn each other," Nemith said. "There's a cohesiveness with the group."

"The bottom line is the kids and the coaches have fun. If the players step up and we (coaches) all do our jobs, we'll have a lot of fun."
