EMMA GLASS COVINGTON 1925 - 2007

Emma Glass Covington, 82, Passed away on Saturday, August 18, 2007.

Emma was born June 8, 1925 in Pensacola, FLto Robert and Florence Palmer. She graduated from Pensacola High School in 1943. Emma graduated from Converse College, Spartanburg, SC, in 1947, and, after earning her teacher's certificate from Florida State University, she returned to Pensacola to teach 1st and 2nd grade. She married John Duke Covington, a native of Pensacola, in 1953 and moved to Okmulgee, OK where her children were born. After 2 years in Muskogee, OK the family moved to Joplin, MO for a span of 18 years. Emma and John returned to northwest Florida after retirement and settled in Gulf Breeze 24 years ago.

Emma was a member of First Presbyterian Church in downtown Pensacola for many years where she was active in women's circle and the sewing missionary work of the church. Recently, she and John transferred membership to the Gulf Breeze Presbyterian Church. Besides church work, her other interests included smocking, gardening, reading and music.

Emma is predeceased by her half-sister, Jane Wicke, and brother, Dr. Robert Palmer, both of Pensacola.

She is survived by her loving husband of 54 years, John Duke Covington; three children, John D. Covington Jr. of New Ulm, MN who is married to Kathy, Robert T. Covington of Gulf Breeze and special friend Darlene Matthews, and Florence "Wren" Fitzgerald of Piscataway, NJ who is married to Carl; six grandchildren, Holly, Anna, Kacie and Alisa Covington and Eddie and Kelsey Fitzgerald. Emma has a large extended family of nephews and nieces and will be missed by many loving and close friends.

Visitation was at 9 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 21, 2007 at the Gulf Breeze Presbyterian Church, 100 Andrew Jackson Trail, followed by the funeral at 10:00 a.m.

Interment followed at St. John's Cemetery, 301 N G St. Pensacola, FL.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Florence Glass Palmer Memorial Scholarship Fund at the University of West Florida, 11000 University Parkway, Pensacola, FL32514-5750 or charity of your choice.
