Breakin'out the pads

Jason Thompson /Gulf Breeze News The Dolphins head across the street to practice behind GBHS.
The 2007 Dolphin football team donned its pads for the first time on Thursday, but the day didn't get off to the start they wanted.

Due to inclement weather in the area, the Dolphins spent the first half of their afternoon practice inside the Multi Purpose Room. When the skies cleared, they went back outside.

The freshman squad practiced outside in full pads Thursday morning.

The weather for most of the week was bearable with a slight breeze, but the coaching staff still kept the team hydrated often.

"We already had four or five water breaks scheduled in," coach Chris Nemith said. "We gave them five or six extra ones. since we're not in school yet, we can do that."

The Dolphins may be young in experience, but not in age - only one starter will be back on both sides of the ball.

Seniors Jimmy Beyers and Houston Chapman have stepped up on defense.

"(Jimmy and Houston) are anchoring the defense," Nemith said, adding that Philip Hoffman has made great strides at defensive back.

Jason Thompson/Gulf Breeze News Members of the Dolphin junior varsity football team watch a drill inside the multi purpose room at Gulf Breeze Middle School.
"I like his attitude," Nemith said. "He may not be a front line guy, but he's dad gum going to play a lot."

"If Shane (Dorlag) and Stuart (Franklin) are in there for a 12, 13 play drive, we can put him out there and he'll be OK."

Chase Landrum has also stood out in the first week of practice, has as Rhys Rinke and Joey Leonard. Rinke is coming back from offseason knee surgery.

"(Leonard) has done a wonderful job," Nemith said.

The Dolphins will host their annual barbecue and intersquad scrimmage Friday at 7 p.m. The barbecue starts at 5 p.m.

The Junior Quarterback Club will hold a Meet The Team Night August 23 at 6 p.m. at the stadium, with their Preseason Classic the following night in Crestview.

The ninth grade and junior varsity squads will both play one quarter, while the varsity teams will play the second half.
