Are you a red hot mama?
Menopause management program focuses on self defense

On Tuesday, August 28, West Florida Hospital will conduct its free monthly Red Hot Mamas menopause management workshop entitled "Women and Self Defense."

The session will be held in the West Florida Rehabilitation Institute Gym beginning with a light dinner at 5:30 p.m. followed by the program at 6:15 p.m.

Doug Davis, master instructor for Seikou Martial Arts Academy, will be the featured speaker. During the session, Davis will discuss the prevalence of assault on women and how learning the basics of self-defense can help them feel less vulnerable. Davis will also demonstrate some basic selfdefense techniques and attendees will be able to try out the various moves; consequently, participants are encouraged to wear comfortable clothing.

Founded in 1991, Red Hot Mamas is a free membership-based program that provides medical information and peer support to women who are transitioning into menopause.

Red Hot Mamas features monthly seminars focusing on medical and quality of life issues as well as treatment options. Topics include nutrition, exercise, weight management, memory loss, menopause and heart disease, and hormone replacement therapy and alternatives. At the sessions, participants will learn how to manage their menopause instead of allowing it to manage them. Membership and events are free and open to all women. Reservations are required; to register, call (850) 494- 3212.
