Civic clubs begin planning next year

Civic Clubs have had, and continue to have, an immense impact on efforts to meet the changing needs of the Gulf Breeze and Navarre communities. Every year these clubs generates successes in small ways that make a difference in the area they serve. Most of them do not hold formal meetings in the summer but that doesn't mean that they don't work hard. The Club members develop goals and purposes to serve the community and plan strategies to achieve them. Each Club is filled with vibrant energetic and committed members.

Gulf Isle Neighbors

Following a trip down memory lane the new officers were installed by Elle Ackley. They are: Nancy Wyse, President; Debbie Slater Vice President; Kathy Christoff, Secretary; and Toni Kowalskey, Treasurer. Their next meeting will be at the Civic Center on September 12th. It will be a productive and interesting year for the Gulf Isle Neighbors.

Pensacola Beach Woman's Club

The Pensacola Beach Woman's will have its first 2 0 0 7 - 2 0 0 8 meeting today, Aug 16, at 12 am at the Community house next to the Pensacola Beach Community Church. This meeting is pot luck social meeting. Their first business meeting for 2007-08 will be held on September 20 and every third Thursday of the month after that. The meeting places will be determined and announced.

Santa Rosa Woman's Club (SRWC)

The 2007-2008 officers of the SRWC, President, Marion Ginn; President-Elect, Barbara Gonshor; Co-First Vice Presidents, Linda White- Spunner and Linda Dawson; Second Vice President, Jane Parker, Recording Secretary, Pat Tunison; Corresponding Secretary, Mary Eder; and Treasurer, Anna Campbell, are planning an exciting year's agenda. The club is divided into six departments: Public Affairs, Conservation, International Affairs, Home Life, Arts and Education. Each department selects a chairman and co-chairman and is responsible for a program and at least one project each year related to that department's purpose. The department members have been busy all summer making plans for the new year.

Ackley
The Public Affairs Department will be responsible for the program of the Sept. 9 meeting. The Chairman of the department, Sally Stanford, reports that the program will feature Dr. Robert Harriman, Administrator of Andrews Institute and Gulf Breeze Hospital on how Andrews relates to the community. The department's projects will include a tour of Andrews and activities for fire safety and fire prevention week, Oct. 7 through 13.

The International Affairs Program will sponsor the program for the Oct. 3 meeting. Chairman Bettie Lee Sundstrom is proud to announce that Pat Quinn, Director Emeritus and Founder of Gulf Breeze Zoo, will tell members about his safari in Africa and show them short video. The department will hold a 50/50 drawing and a silent auction to raise funds for the Heifer Project.

Johnson
Conservation Chairman Alma Dearth announced the presence of David Ogden, a ranger with the National Park Service, at the meeting on Nov. 11. David will talk about how the park is coming back from Hurricane Ivan and Hurricane Dennis' destruction. The department projects are to clean up beach along the national park headquarters area and collect supplies for wildlife rescue.

The Home Life Department will provide the program for the meeting on Jan. 8. Chairman, Barbara Miksch, says the Program will feature a discussion by Dr. William Henghold, MOHS Surgeon on how to recognize skin cancers and prevention. The departments projects will include face painting at sports ability and a food drive for Interfaith Ministries Food Pantry from Oct 5 from 9 to 12 at Wal- Mart.

The Arts Department with Chairman Shirley Gaddis will have a singing program for the meeting on Feb. 2. The Arts Department projects include: a tour of an art museum, arts festival organization, hat making for special needs kids at Gulf Coast Arts Festival on Nov. 7 and hat making for kids at the Gulf Breeze celebrates the Arts on March 8.

The Education Department will be held on March 4, and Chairman Shari Fulford announced that Leslie Jolly, third grade teacher at GB Elementary, will speak about the Jazzy Jellyfish Café. The department's projects include working with a special needs class, providing lunches for sports ability games and Little Red School House schedule coordination, collection of coupons and labels for education.

The education committee of the Santa Rosa Woman's Club applied and received a grant of $500 from the Gulf Breeze Wal-Mart Store to be used for special equipment at the Gulf Breeze Middle School-Special Education Class. Cheryl Camire, Donations Coordinator, gave unwavering assistance in helping the Education Department apply for the grant. The money will be spent in purchasing equipment to help the students gain strength and balance in everyday activities. Wal-Mart has demonstrated continued support and involvement in the Gulf Breeze community.

The new project, "The Little Red Schoolhouse," the club will be working with the Santa Rosa Education Foundation and business sponsor Wal-Mart of Gulf Breeze. The foundation provides the building, utilities and furnishings of the "schoolhouse"; Wal-Mart provides the teacher supplies to stock the "schoolhouse"; and the Santa Rosa Woman's Club will provide the manpower to run the "schoolhouse". It is a place where teachers, armed with special vouchers, can shop for classroom and student needs at special prices and will be open on Monday and Wednesday afternoons beginning with the new school year for 2007-2008.
