Gulf Breeze Rotary hears beach update from SRIA
Santa Rosa Shores Women's Club

Betty Archer Allen/Gulf Breeze News Shelia Little is presenting an appreciation gift to Santa Rosa Women's Club, President Fran Fletcher, at the last meeting for the summer.
The Santa Rosa Women's Club held a progressive dinner on Saturday June 10 with beverages and hors d'oeuvres being served at the home of Shelia Little on Hillside Street to a crowd of 21 ladies. From Shiela's house the group proceeded to Lou Jones's home on Laguna Lane for a delicious sit down dinner prepared by club member, Trish Trachy.

A short meeting was held and the new board members were addressed. The club's Queen of Hearts for the year, Mona Michael, was honored and the president, Fran Fletcher was given a gift for her past service as president.

This was the club's last meeting for the summer. The next meeting will be held in September. Santa Rosa Shores Women's Club is open to any lady in the Santa Rosa Shores community. If you need more information call Margaret Cunningham at 850-932-2914.

Driftwood Garden Club

The Driftwood Garden Club held its annual picnic on Sunday, June 3 at the lovely Shoreline home of Bob and Pat Landfair on Santa Rosa Sound. This year the theme was a Cowboy barbecue and the hostess members, Pat Landfair, Shari Fulford and Mona Brown, wore cowboy hats. The food was catered by Sonny's Barbecue and the food was delicious and abundant.

This was the last get together of the fiscal year for the club and it was an exciting and moving experience. It was exciting because many husbands attended which always adds a thrill to the party and it was moving because there were winds of 60 miles an hour out on the Sound and the food and beverages had to be served from inside the house.

The tablecloths had to be taped to the outside picnic tables and the flower arrangements had to be surrounded by brick to keep them from blowing away. But the Driftwood Garden Club did not allow these impediments to deter or disturb them at all.

In fact, they had a lot of fun when their emptied paper plates seem to fly in the face of members and guests.

Finally before sunset, the winds slowed down to a reasonable cool breeze. The group really enjoyed the party and the camaraderie of its members and their spouses.

Gulf Breeze Rotary

The programs of the Gulf Breeze Rotary Club's latest meetings were focused on the local communities of Pensacola Beach and Gulf Breeze.

On June 7, the program featured Buck Lee, General Manager of the Santa Rosa Island Authority. Buck and his assistant Sue Smith gave a wonderful PowerPoint presentation on the recovery of Pensacola Beach after Hurricanes Ivan, Dennis and Katrina. The road projects to widen Via De Luna and Ft Pickens are almost complete and should be completed by September of this year. The new public safety building on Casino Beach is a vast improvement.

New hotel rooms are coming available very soon and the Blue Angels will be flying in July.

The Tuesday Bands on the Beach program has been a huge success and the island is steadily moving forward. Buck answered several questions to do with time lines for home owner rebuilding.

The June 12 program speaker was Bob Montgomery of the Regional Transportation Authority. Bob made a few comments and introduced Ray Risener of HDR Engineering who introduced the narrated slide show about improving traffic on Highway 98. They have held local meetings in the affected counties seeking input from citizens.

Ray stressed that the board is composed of businessmen not bureaucrats and is intent on gaining a consensus and taking action to alleviate the Hwy 98 traffic problems. The area project with the highest interest is "where will the bridge that replaces the Pensacola Bay Bridge be located?" That is still being worked out but one area being considered is on the east end of the Naval Live Oaks Reserve. Eglin Air Force Base has approved a plan to allow Hwy 98 to run through its property. Any new bridges or roads may have tolls to help them be funded because state money for highways is in short supply. Bob and Ray entertained questions for all concerned.

GFWC Milton Woman's Club

The GFWC Milton Woman's Club, Inc. presented the 1st Annual Women In The Arts Awards on Tuesday, June 12, at 7 p.m. at the Santa Rosa County Auditorium. The evening's MC was Mrs. Clairen Reese. City of Milton Mayor, Guy Thompson delivered welcoming remarks and commended the Woman's Club and Stephens and Mapoles on the outstanding job they do for the City of Milton and all of Santa Rosa County.

Craig Perry, of the Great Gulfcoast Arts Festival, spoke on behalf of the Festival and told guests he was amazed at what the club had done on behalf of the arts and women. The $1,500 grant received from the Festival helped enable the Woman's Club to present the awards event.

Chairman of the event was Cecile Stephens, Woman's Club vice president and art department chairman.

Stephens read a letter of congratulations from Congressman Jeff Miller, who was unable to attend.

Guests enjoyed entertainment by Jessica Thurmond Jarina, daughter of Laurie and Mark Jarina. This extremely talented 21 year old, received a standing ovation at the conclusion of her program. She entertained guests with not only her voice, but with her superb piano accompaniment to her closing song, one she wrote especially for the evening's event, My Miracle Lullaby, a piece she wrote in memory of her mother who died of breast cancer six days after her thirteenth birthday. Although she quit her music for a brief time after her mother's death, she realized music was her life and she pursues it relentlessly.

Jessie trained in opera until age 16 when she lived in Washington DC and at that point had to make a decision to go pro with her opera or pursue her own music. The decision was hard and cost her the support of a lot of people but according to the Jessica, it was the right thing for her. She has been writing music since age 13 and has performed on Broadway, in choirs, operas and with numerous bands. But it wasn't until about a year ago she began recording on a regular basis.
