Event to help wounded vets reclaim independence The Independence Fund/Aleethia Foundation, in collaboration with the Americas Huey 091 Fund, welcomes the public to join them for "Heroes Night," a fundraising event at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, June 18 at Seville Quarter's Rosie O'Grady's. The evening's entertainment will be provided by Nashville recording artist Stephen Cochran. Qualifying tax-deductible check donations will be accepted along with tip donations, contributed by our guests. Over 25,000 US troops have been wounded in current conflicts. Twenty-five percent of these wounded have sustained traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, severe amputations of extremities, or a combination of all of the above. As the numbers of combat injuries and other service-connected injuries steadily increases, it is easy to see how the needs placed upon the care system for these brave individuals increases as well. It is the purpose of the Independence Fund to serve wounded and disabled Veterans of the U.S. Armed Services. Our mission is to promote and expand the independence, selfrespect, self-esteem, and improve the quality of life of these brave men and women. The Independence Fund focuses on serving the needs of the estimated 25 percent that are Very Seriously Injured (VSI's) according to the Department of Defense definition. They also provide services, that are not otherwise being provided to any Veteran of the U.S. Armed Services, who served honorably and was injured in the line of duty during the Global War on Terrorism, regardless if the injury took place in a combat zone or not. The America's Huey 091 Education Foundation's purpose is to educate students on the history of our nation's wars and the price of freedom paid by our Veterans in defense of our Country and the Constitution. The Huey 091 team was responsible for the delivery and donation of a Vietnam-era Huey Helicopter to the Smithsonian National Museum of American History where it is the largest artifact in a major 30-year exhibit entitled "The Price of Freedom." Sponsored in part by American Airlines, the 091 team is made up of volunteers from across the country including Retired General P. X. Kelly, former commandant of the United States Marine Corps and acclaimed author of the book "Stolen Valor," B. G. Burkett.
