BBB issues warning for phishing attack

The Better Business Bureau of Northwest Florida (BBB) is warning businesses and consumers in Northwest Florida of a spoofing scam using the BBB name and a false BBB e-mail address to entice recipients to access potentially damaging hyperlinks and attachments.

BBB staff said none of the BBB's computers or e-mail systems are involved in this hoax and the attack has not affected the computer system of the BBB or compromised any BBB-held data. The BBB and authorities are working together to stop these continued attacks.

The e-mail you received may be fraudulent if:

The body of the email begins with text similar to the below:

Cherokee Tribe to meet in Milton

The Wolf Creek Cherokee Tribe will be holding a General Assembly meeting at 5 p.m., June 16 at Red Barn Bar B-Q, located at 5887 Highway in Milton. This meeting is open to the public and all interested members of the community are urged to attend. Special Guest Demonstrator will be Jan Perritt who will show how to make dream catchers using wild grape vines as hoops.

Oil painting class to be offered

Well known local artist, Marian Guthrie is teaching a workshop in Pensacola, at Framing By Design, on July 23 through July 26. Students will look at composition, color mixing, values, and thinking like an artist. Artists may paint on canvas or paper, and will be using a limited palette.

The workshop will be from 9 a.m. To 3 p.m. and will cost $110 for the four days. Adeposit of $25 will hold reserved space. For details call 850-476-0712.

House Bill 537 creates changes

The Santa Rosa County Office of Elections would like residents to understand that House Bill 537 affects them in the following ways:

1. All voting except Touch screens for the disabled (ADA requires one in each voting site), will be by Optical Scan Voting Equipment. Santa Rosa County will use the same equipment it has used for the past fourteen years. After the 2008 election, new equipment will be required.

2. Sixteen (16) year old can pre-register upon receipt of a valid Drivers License.

3. A county commissioner is elected on the date that the county canvassing board certifies the results of an election. Not on Election Day.

4. HB 537 moves Presidential Preference to the last Tuesday in January; and the Primary to the last Tuesday in August.

5. HB 537 removes two identifications used at polls; they are Employees Badge and Buyer's Club ID.

6. Absentee ballot requests are good through two regularly scheduled general elections.

7. Any person who makes or accepts a contribution in excess of $50 is in violation of the law.

8. At the time of qualification, all write-in candidates must reside within the district represented by the district sought.
