Gulf Breeze U11s take second at Evans Shootout

The Gulf Breeze U11 travel basketball team ran into a bit of a roadblock in their first game of the Reggie Evans Southeast Jam basketball tournament at UWF on Memorial Day Weekend.

Their first game was against the Louisiana Elite Warriors, a team from New Orleans who were the defending Louisiana state champions and the sixth ranked U11 team in the country, and lost 58-10. Brandon Aydelott scored eight points for Gulf Breeze in the game and Nick Dugger scored two.

However they were able to regroup and win their second game against the Eastern Shore Sharks 29-23. Brandon Aydelott scored 12 points in the win, while Tristen Hicks had four points and David Alverson had three points. Nick Dugger, Connor Crooke, Kale Jarvis, Brian Garbell each had two points.

Gulf Breeze ended up playing the Sharks in the Championship game and lost 22-18. Kale Jarvis was their leading scorer in the Championship with eight points. Jack Joyner had four points, Tristan Hicks had three points, Nick Dugger had two points, and David Alverson had one point.

U12s

The Gulf Breeze U12 travel team played a close game against the U12 Reggie Evans Elite travel team but lost 24-26. Xan Sarra had nine points for Gulf Breeze, while Jonathan Burkett, Joel Fry, and Nick Kessler each had four points. Landon Cagle had two points and Nick Bookout had one point.

The U12 team then played the U13 Eastern Shore Sharks twice and lost 37-13 and 46-12. In the first game Landon Cagle had four points and Xan Sara had three for Gulf Breeze. Jonathan Burkett, Nick Bookout, and Nick Kessler each had two points.

U13s

The U13 Gulf Breeze team was very overmatched as they were placed in a U14 bracket. In their first game they played the U14 Alabama Cobras and lost 60-19. Chris Taylor was Gulf Breeze's highest scorer in the game scoring five points. Joshua Monserrate, Taylor Busbee, Jordan Bennett, Andrew Jurnovoy, Mason Barnes, Paul Spraggins, and Mitchell Dekozan each had two points.

The U13 team then played the U14 Montgomery Wizards and lost 46-16. Jordan Bennett scored five to lead Gulf Breeze in scoring. Paul Spraggins had four points, and Andrew Jurnovoy had three. Both Mason Barnes and Joshua Monserrate each had two points.

The U13 team's final game was against the only other U13 team in their bracket, the Pensacola Tigers, and they lost 43-22. Chris Taylor had eight points for Gulf Breeze. Both Paul Spraggins and Mitchell Dekozan each had four points. Joshua Monserrate and Andrew Jurnovoy each had two points.

U14s

The U14 Gulf Breeze team did find some success in their games. They beat the U13 Pensacola Tigers 31-27. Erik Adams and Jake Baker both had eight points for Gulf Breeze. Ross O'Hara and Kalani Routh both had four points, Sammy Byrne had three points, and Erik Kelsch had two points.

The U14 team wasn't as successful in their next game against the U14 Alabama Cobras as they lost 72-28. Jake Baker was Gulf Breeze's leading scorer with 13 points. Kalani Routh had six points, Erik Adams had four points, and Sammy Byrne had three points.

U15s

The U15 Gulf Breeze team was defeated soundly by the U15 Alabama Cobras twice. They lost the first game 58-21. David Keene was their leading scorer with six points, and Jaylin Coulter had five points. Nick Humphrey had four points, and both Tyler Fairleigh and Drew Lynch had two points.

The U15 team lost their other game 49-21. They got four points each from Tyler Fairleigh, Jaylin Coulter, and Drew Lynch. Brent Stanhagen had three points, and both Colin Brown and Michael Schmitz had two points.

U16s and U17s

Both U16 and U17 teams advanced to the semifinals before being eliminated.

The U17s opened play with a 48-30 loss to the Alabama Dream Team out of Montgomery. The Dream Team led by 18 at the half, holding Gulf Breeze to just 12 points.

Matt Patrick and Bryan Shreve both had eight points, while Marcus Smith had five points, David Hibberts four, Zach Andrews and Alec Cann two each and Dustin Clements one.

The U17s trailed by 12 at the half of a 50-32 loss to FDD (Faith, Discipline, Diligence) out of Fort Walton.

Patrick led Gulf Breeze with nine points, while Hibberts had eight, Cann six, Andrews five and Clements and Shreve two each.

With only six players, Gulf Breeze rallied from a six point halftime deficit to defeat West Florida 44-39. Patrick and Cann, both of whom had 12 points, hit two free throws with 40.3 and 26 seconds left, respectively to seal the win.

Matt Catellier, who had nine points, hit one of his three 3- pointers with 1:50 left to seal the win. Shreve also had nine points, while Clements had two.

Gulf Breeze led the Alabama Dream Team 13-10 midway through the first half before the Dream Team went on a 22-2 run to end the first half. They went on to beat Gulf Breeze 63-36.

Andrews hit three 3-pointers and finished with 11 points. Shreve added seven points, while Cann and Catellier had five each, Clements four and Patrick and Smith had two each.

The U16s opened play with a 48-41 loss to FDD. Down by as many as 16 in the second half, Gulf Breeze got as close as five on Jeff White's layup with 1:25 left. White led Gulf Breeze with 13 points.

Bo Pearson added 10, while Damien Kleisch added six, Joey Bodovetz five and Garrett Carr and Alex Duntz four each.

The U16s got a bucket from White with 3.9 seconds left and a Peardon free throw with 1.8 seconds left to edge Marianna's Green Wave 54-51.

Carr had 18 points, hitting five three-pointers in the second half. White added 13, Duntz eight, Kleisch seven, Peardon five and Ryan O'Hara two.

The U16s lost to Biloxi's Next Level 46-41. Gulf Breeze missed some free throws late in the game that proved costly.
