An old-fashioned bargain at Olde Seville Square
Almost 10,000 people have come each year - so come early. Bring your blanket or chair and settle down for an evening of music that is sure to please. And remember, it's STILL free! ******** Thinking about the World War II Memorial Month brought back some memories for me of my own experience with the USO at that time. I was a member of the Philadelphia Club of Advertising Women, one of many such groups who shared the job of entertaining our troops. Some of them were on their way overseas, while others had just returned. We who had signed up for this duty met at a hotel in Philadelphia to change into evening dresses and board a special bus which took us on the long trip to Fort Dix, New Jersey. When we arrived at the Officers Club therte, we ran the gauntlet of soldiers waiting to see who they would ask for a dance. I remember one partner who particularly stays in my mind. He was a very pleasant corporal of about twenty, with a nice smile, but absolutely no dancing skills. The rule for our entertaining effort was 'three dances in a row" with one partner, and then we had to change. But after I had three dances with others, the corporal was right back again for another three. His sad lack of terpsichorean abilities were more in evidence each time. I admit that his size twelve or perhaps fourteen Army boots may have made things more difficult. But his confession that he had in fact never worn shoes at all before joining the Army was somewhat of a shock! He explained that, back home in the hills of Tennessee, he used to go barefoot all summer, and in the winter, wore heavy rags wrapped around his feet, padded inside with straw. All these years later, I wonder if his Army boots are moldering away somewhere in a Tennessee mountain cabin. And maybe he is regaling his great-grandchildren with his memories of World War 2. Well, it's spring now, and I hope he thinks it is warm enough wherever he is to go barefoot again. Anyway, he was a nice change from some of those fast-talking Brooklyn guys! ***** According to the American Academy of Neurology, a group of scientists made one thousand studies to develop three special guidelines to enable doctors to recognize early warning signs of Alzheimer's Disease. Here are a few symptoms to look for: Difficulty in performing familiar tasks. Loss of interest in former skills or hobbies. Loss of ability to remember dates and time. Misplaced items, losing objects. Changes in personality. For more information, contact Alzheimer's Family services locally at 478-7790. The office is located at 3454 East Olive Road. Or you can mail email them at alzfamser@aol.com Remember that there are many things that can be done now to help Alzheimer's disease victims that were not available in the past. ************ "Outside of a dog, a book is probably man's best friend, and inside of a dog, it's too dark to read."-- Groucho Marx.
