BY BETTY ARCHER ALLEN Gulf Breeze News news@gulfbreezenews.com

Betty Archer Allen/Gulf Breeze News Fifth grade students in Janice Wilkins, Terrie Lyons and Natalie Sommer classes are planting flowers on the Gulf Breeze Elementary School campus to create an outdoor Science Garden/Lab.
On Thursday April 19, the fifth grade students in Janice Wilkins, Terrie Lyons, and Natalie Sommer classes broke the ground on the Gulf Breeze Elementary School (GBES) campus to create an outdoor Science Garden/Lab.

The entire GBES population will utilize this garden in practicing scientific processing skills. These three teachers wrote a grant to the Santa Rosa Education Foundation and were awarded $500 for this project.

The teachers' major goal was to provide active learning and hands-on experiences in the field of science. To do this they wanted to establish a Garden of Learning as an outdoor science laboratory where students can gain first-hand knowledge of a variety of ecosystems.

The development and implementation of the Garden will include each classroom's involvement in the planning, creating, and maintaining of a specific habitat. The major habitats developed will be a cultivated plot, a wetland habitat, a "backyard" area consisting of a bird-watching station and a butterfly garden, a weather station, and an area for reading and conducting seminars in the outdoors.

Wilkins
Teachers will use the garden for science lessons that will integrate reading, writing, math concepts, and social studies into garden activities. Teachers will draw on students' questions and ideas to guide lessons and use open-ended questioning strategies. Students will predict outcomes, test and research investigations, and use math and technology skills to chart and graph data.

The three teachers, Janice Wilkins, Terrie Lyons, and Natalie Sommer, who applied and got this grant have a very impressive background and are very enthusiastic educators.

Janice Wilkins has a B.S. in Elementary Education with a focus on English from Texas A & I University and a Masters Degree in Educational Leadership-Administration from University of West Florida, She holds many certifications from K through 12 right up to educational Leadership and Administration. She has had approximately 23 years teaching experience in Elementary and Middle Schools.

Lyons
Wilkins has taken advantage of has taken advantage of many in-service education programs and functioned in many leadership roles throughout her career. She calls her classes Wilkins'Wonders.

Terrie Lyons received her B.S. Elementary Education and Masters Degree in Middle School Curriculum and Instruction from the University of West Florida. She has 16 years experience as a classroom teacher.

She holds certification in Elementary and Middle School education. Terri has successfully passed the Potential Candidate Training program, served on many School Committees and has been chairperson for Science Fair. She currently serves as the Science Department Chairperson for the school. She was chosen as 2003/2004 Teacher of the Year for Woodlawn Beach Middle School.

Natalie Sommer has a Master's of Education in Education Leadership/Curriculum and Instruction from University of West Florida. She has 17 years experience of teaching in elementary, middle school and high school.

Sommer
She taught English, German, and Journalism in Escambia and Santa Rosa counties. She has taught ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) post secondary as an adjunct at Pensacola Junior College. She was Bellview Middle School Teacher of the Year in 2000 and the Escambia Middle School English Teacher of the Year in 1999.

In their application for the grant Wilkins, Lyons and Sommer pointed out that "Developing scientific literacy in children is no longer sufficient. Children must be scientifically and environmentally aware. All living things on our beautiful planet depend on the environment to provide the food and water necessary to grow and to live."

This Science Garden/Lab will be developed and used by all grade levels K -5. These teachers have achieved their major goal to provide active learning and hands-on experiences by establishing a Garden of Learning as an outdoor science laboratory.
