GBH seeks help from teen volunteers

Teens interested in a career in health care, or high school teens that need volunteer hours for scholarships are encouraged to contact Gulf Breeze Hospital. The Gulf Breeze Hospital Auxiliary will hold an orientation for teenage volunteers on Tuesday, May 29, in the Education Training conference room of the hospital. Teens must be in high school and 15-17 years of age. An interview, parental permission, and a recommendation from a high school counselor is required before attending the orientation. Call Faye Cibula at 932-5270 by May 22 for an interview appointment and required paperwork.

Non-Surgical Weight Management Program Available

Baptist Bariatric Center presents "Create Your Weight," an innovative, personalized, nonsurgical weight management program facilitated by a registered dietitian using a non-diet approach. The program assists individuals in achieving healthy weight goals by teaching nutrition, understanding food labels, dining out and recipe modifications, behavior modifications, exercise and more. Individual appointments and group classes available.

A free informational seminar about the program will be May 22 from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in Baptist Hospital's Heritage Room.

Meet the Doctors: Bariatric Surgeons J. David Nye, M.D. and Glenn Burleson, M.D.

Learn about obesity, treatment options and bariatric services at Baptist Hospital. Ameet the doctor program will be held on May 23 at 6:30 p.m. in the medical meeting rooms of Baptist Medical Towers, located at 1717 North E Street. Bariatric surgeons J. David Nye, M.D. and Glenn Burleson, M.D. will provide information on weightloss surgery- including the new lap band surgery- and non-surgical treatment options for morbid obesity.

Chemotherapy Support Available

The Baptist Cancer Institute is now offering an orientation to chemotherapy class for anyone diagnosed with cancer or about to begin chemotherapy treatments.

Chemotherapy has been used as a method of cancer treatment since the 1950s. Although the treatment has been proven a successful method to control or suppress cancer cells, it can also cause side affects which now can be managed.

Topics covered in the weekly class include an overview of what cancer is, chemotherapy and how it works, managing side affects, nutrition during treatment, support for patients and families and the patient's role in cancer care.

Classes are available every Wednesday beginning at 10 a.m. in suite 233 of Baptist Medical Tower 3, 1717 North E Street, Pensacola.

West Florida Hospital renews ADA certificate

The American Diabetes Association (ADA) recently extended The Diabetes Center at West Florida Hospital's Education Recognition Certificate. The extension is good for another three years. By re-conferring this prestigious recognition, ADA is affirming that West Florida Hospital's diabetes program continues to offer high-quality education that is an essential component of effective diabetes treatment.

The Association's Education Recognition Certificate assures that educational programs meet the National Standards for Diabetes Self-Management Education Programs. These Standards were developed and tested under the auspices of the National Diabetes Advisory Board in 1983 and revised in 1994 and 2000.
