Fifth grader at Gulf Breeze Elementary School visited Project Green Shores April 23- 25 to learn about the eight-acre estuary ecosystem. Project Green Shores was created by the Department of Environmental Protection beginning in 2004 as a habitat restoration project. They learned about the different birds that visit or call the area home. There are about 60 different species that have been documented there. Another group spoke about the different types of grasses that were planted there. About 100,000 plants were planted by hand to get the project started. The final group had a touch tank so we could see and learn about some of the different critters that live at project Green Shores. There were hermit crabs, pin fish, ghost shrimp and juvenile sheephead. Project Green Shores is open to the public and can be accessed by canoe or kayak. They ask that people stay off of the sand islands to protect the grasses and animals that live on them.
