Adult Cancer Camp is topic of May 8 meeting

Cancer patients, cancer survivors, their families and friends are invited to the next meeting of Sacred Heart Hospital's Cancer Support Group. The meeting will be held Tuesday, May 8, from 2 to 3 p.m. in the main hospital's Oncology Unit Library on the second floor. Valet parking is available at the hospital's main entrance on Ninth Avenue.

Guest speaker will be James Hull, a Camp Bluebird volunteer, who will talk about Sacred Heart's cancer camp for adults. Camp Bluebird meets twice a year at Sacred Heart's Miracle Camp on Beulah Road in Escambia County.

The support group meets on the second Tuesday of each month at 2 p.m. in the same location. Upcoming topics to be addressed include Advance Directives, side effects of chemotherapy, disability, journaling, and creative imagery.

Breast Cancer is topic of Seniors Seminar May 16

Sacred Heart Hospital's Senior Service's program will present a free seminar on breast cancer in Pensacola on Wednesday, May 16 from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. in the Greenhut Auditorium on Sacred Heart's Ninth Avenue campus.

The seminar will be presented by Dr. Silwan "Solly" Chedid a board-certified cancer specialist with Sacred Heart Medical Oncology Group. The seminar will help attendees understand the signs and symptoms of breast cancer as well as methods of treatment and management of the disease.

According to the American Cancer Society, breast cancer is the most common cancer among women, other than skin cancer, and is the second leading cause of cancer death in women, after lung cancer.Registration is required and seating is limited. To register, call (850) 416-1620 or 1-877-416-1620.

Volunteer program open to teens

Are you a teen interested in a career in health care or a high school teen that needs volunteer hours for scholarship? The Gulf Breeze Hospital Auxiliary will hold an orientation for teenage volunteers on Tuesday, May 29, in the Education Training conference room of the hospital. Teens must be in high school and 15-17 years of age. An interview, parental permission, and a recommendation from a high school counselor is required before attending the orientation.
