PLAN YOUR WEEKEND
In the early decades of the 20th century, the German Expressionists experimented with various print media, particularly the woodcut, in startling new ways. Artists such as Erich Heckel and Karl Schmidt- Rotluff carved wood blocks that released the expressive potential of the medium. Their images emphasized the psychological turmoil brought on by World War I and its aftermath. Other artists, including Otto Dix and Kathe Kollwitz, dealt with social issues through images depicting the avarice of industrialists or the ravages caused by the war. Courtesy of the Syracuse University Art Collection and made possible locally by Ms. Cathy Kress, Impassioned Images examines German printmaking activity between the World Wars when the groups "Die Brücke" (The Bridge) and "Neue Sachlichkiet" (New Objectivity) were formed. The imagery created by the two groups exhibits a technical and emotional intensity rarely seen in western graphic art. Other artists featured in the exhibition include Wassily Kandinsky, Max Pechstein, George Grosz, Ernst Barlach and Max Beckmann.
