Martin Bunt, a former Gulf Breeze resident and a senior at Catholic, signed a golf scholarship with Samford University Thursday.

"Samford is a Division I school - they have the total package," said Bunt, who also drew interest from Vanderbilt, Ohio State, Wake Forest and Auburn. He visited 15 schools at the end of his junior year.

"They have a lot of good golf courses in the area that I can play on a try to improve my game," he said.

"He is an awesome young man who has brought a lot of joy to the Catholic High family," said Catholic golf coach Sonny Reedy, also a Gulf Breeze resident.

Samford University won the Ohio Valley Conference Championship in 2003. They are coached by Woodie Eubanks, a Samford University graduate.

Bunt led the Crusaders to the district and regional titles this past season, shooting a 70 and a 78, respectively in those tournaments. The Dolphins finished second at districts.

Bunt's two-day total at state was a 149 (75-74), good for 12th place in the individual competition. The Crusaders finished in a tie for fifth at state.

Bunt's older sister Tiffany played softball at Gulf Breeze High in the late 90s.

The Bulldogs played in the 2007 Ohio Valley Conference Championships this week in Paducah, Ky. They were tied for fifth (out of 10) after round one.
