GBHS loses battle of district leaders
Two errors in five run fourth prove costly against West Florida Tech

The Gulf Breeze Dolphin baseball team avenged an earlier loss to Navarre last week before losing its first district 'seed' game at West Florida Tech on Thursday.

Dolphins 14, Navarre 1

(five innings)

Gulf Breeze put up 'crooked numbers' in each of the first three innings as they drilled Navarre on the road March 27.

T.J. Jordan, who had three hits and three RBIs, hit a two-run single in the first inning before Ashton Vance hit an RBI single with two outs. Jordan's hit scored Brandon Scott and Kameron Brunty, who both singled, while Vance's hit plated Boomer Harrington, who walked.

Brunty scored twice for the Dolphins, while Harrington scored twice and drove in two runs. Vance had two hits and two RBIs in the win.

Gulf Breeze tacked on three more in the second inning. Shane Dorlag, who scored twice, beat out an infield single and scored on a wild pitch before Tyler Schumacher scored on a wild pitch.

Schumacher went in to run for Kolton Hanke, who was hit in the head by a pitch. He walked off the field under his own power.

Brunty walked and scored on an RBI single by Jordan to make it 6-0.

Gulf Breeze blew the game open with seven runs in the top of the third. Hanke reentered the game and hit a two-run single, scoring Tyler Gross and Dorlag. Gross reached base on a base on balls, but later singled in the inning. Gross had two hits and scored twice.

Harrington and Vance both hit two-run singles in the inning.

The Raiders scored what would be their lone run in the bottom of the third before the Dolphins tacked on another run in the top of the fifth. Gross singled with one out and scored on a two-out double by Hanke.

Michael Thomas struck out three in the first three innings before giving way to Dane Monnin.

The game avenged a 1-0 loss at home to the Raiders on Feb. 20, a game where Greg Tober struck out 12 and gave up only three hits.

West Florida Tech 6,

Dolphins 2

The Jaguars, who've played in the regional semifinals each of the last two years, took advantage of a pair of Dolphin errors to score five runs in the bottom of the fourth Thursday in Pensacola.

Both teams were 5-0 in district seed games entering the contest.

The Jags drew first blood in the third inning with one run off a hit batter and a one out single.

In the decisive fourth inning, West Florida Tech scored off a pair of walks and a pair of hit batters, along with the two Dolphin errors. A bouncer through the infield accounted for their only hit of the inning.

Gulf Breeze scored single runs in the fourth and sixth innings. Brunty reached on an error and scored on a sac fly by Harrington in the fourth before Brunty singled in the sixth and scored on a two-out single by Gross. Gulf Breeze was looking for more in the sixth, but left the bases loaded.

Tober struck out a pair in 3 2/3 innings, walking three and hitting three before giving way to Mark Waghalter.

Dolphin JV 9, Navarre 5

Gulf Breeze needed a six-run sixth inning for a come from behind win March 27 at Navarre.

Cody Warford went 3-for-4 with a double and scored once, while Corey Downs, Kyle Schnackenberg, Bo Dobson and Kris Matsoukas all had two hits each. Caleb Brown scored twice for Gulf Breeze.

Dolphin ninth grade 8-10,

Navarre 4-0

Steven Robbins doubled and scored twice in the opener before throwing a no-hitter in the second game. He came within a walk and a hit batter of a perfect game, striking out six.

In game one, Isaac Davis had two hits, while Ben Lively and Nicky Schumacher both scored twice. Trey Davis threw 3 1/3 innings of no-hit ball in relief of Joel Wells.

Nick Humphrey and Cruz Lee both went 3-for-4 in the nightcap, while Thomas Dorsey went 2-for-2 and scored twice. Josh Suelflow scored twice in the second game. Dolphin ninth grade 3,

West Florida Tech 3

Gulf Breeze led 3-1 after three and a half innings before the Jaguars rallied in the bottom of the fourth in what would eventually end in a tie due to a time limit.

Robyn Hoffpauir doubled and scored for Gulf Breeze, while Tyler McGee and Lee both singled and scored.
