Clean up storm debris before April 14 deadline Has a chunk of concrete become a fixture in your yard since the past hurricane? Well, it's time to take a fresh look at debris and get it to the curb while Escambia County is footing the bill for beach cleanup. "Team up to clean up" is the title of the beautification effort. Residents should have yard debris, construction and demolition debris up to 25 pounds and small appliances up to 25 pounds taken to the curb before the 14th of April. On the 14th, county crews and volunteers will come through the neighborhoods to collect and remove the debris. "Anybody who's elderly or disabled can call 932-2257 and a volunteer will come out to provide clean up assistance. The resident has to be on the site; they can't call for assistance and then go off somewhere," said Sandy Johnston, executive director of the Pensacola Beach Chamber of Commerce. A mini-hazardous waste roundup for pesticides and herbicides, oil-based paints, paint removers, solvents, brake fluid, stale gasoline, household cleaners, fluorescent lamps and pool chemicals will be available at Casino Beach parking lot on Saturday, April 14. Commercial amounts of hazardous waste will not be accommodated. Volunteers are needed to participate in the cleanup effort, which aims to restore the beach to prehurricane conditions. To register a volunteer group or individual, call the Santa Rosa Island Authority at 932-2257 then come to the Gulfside Pavilion on Saturday, April 14 at 8:30 a.m. for an assignment. Trash bags will be provided. After the cleanup, beach businesses will provide finger foods, and Coca-Cola will provide beverages. Hawaiian Tropic will provide sunscreen for volunteers on that day.
