Mass transit
tbubba@tbubba.com

Allow me to add my answers to the "Three Questions" letter in the "other" newspaper's Sunday issue, in regards to the Mass Transit System in Pensacola.

Have we gone completely PC nuts? Do we not have spine enough to do the right thing any longer, even when it is screaming at us? Do we have anyone in the government anymore that will do the right thing in spite of the terrorists that call themselves "special interest groups?"

First, do we need mass transit in Escambia County? The answer is an emphatic NO! Forget the commissioners, the directors, and experts' opinions! Just look at the number of people riding the buses! DUH! I rarely see more than three people on a bus and many times I see them totally empty. Is that a good enough survey? It is a system that will never pay for it self, is not needed and should be done away with.

Second, how do we pay for it? Answer: WE DON'T! If it can't pay for itself, let it die.

Why, they could sell the buses to Gulf Breeze for DUI roadblocks! Five cents a gallon for everyone in the county is totally ridiculous! More money for something we don't need, now that is great government at work. With seven million in the works, let's buy them all a moped, and save six million, nine hundred and thirty dollars. I know you are asking for five cents a gallon on local gas so you can get us to agree to two cents, what you wanted in the first place, but you may get a surprise on this one. Does anyone even bother to check out smaller, less diesel-guzzling, environmental black smoke-belching mini vans? According to the numbers that rode the BUS last year, we could have done the same thing with mules, but the exhaust here would be worse than diesel smoke. Trust old Bubba on this one!

Third, what will the people do That depend on it? Simple, they will do what they did BEFORE it was bastardized into existence. They will get their families to drive them, have someone pick them up, car pool, buy a cheap car, or walk! In fact, of the few I have seen getting off those buses; most of them need to walk about three miles a day anyway. Maybe the reason they can't fill up the buses is because they are operating on a "weight" load limit. For a hundred years folks that needed to get to work did so, just fine. Let them do it again! If they can't, then find a job closer to your home, but don't expect someone else to pay your way. I know this may make me a real curmudgeon, but I'm tired of paying for things that will never work for us, like the port, and the County Commission! When does the insanity stop? Is there a politician out there that will dare to stand up and say "NO" to this government program that costs so much and gives us so very little in return. Five Cents a gallon! Where are you?

Just thought you'd like to know....
