Cormier earns All-American honors at South Carolina
Former GBHS athletes making mark in pool, on track and on diamond

Kyle Cormier added another accolade to his trophy case recently, earning Honorable Mention All American honors as a member of the University of South Carolina swim team.

A state champion at GBHS his senior year, Cormier was part of USC's 11th place finish in the 800 meter freestyle relay at the NCAA Championships in Minneapolis.

Cormier had three individual swims. His best finish was in the 200 freestyle, where he finished 24th with a time of 1:36.28, a new personal best. He also swam the 200 IM, earning a 40th place finish with a time of 1:49.86. His final event was the 100 freestyle, in which he finished 39th with a time of 44.22.

Cormier is the sone of Jay and Jane Cormier.

Jimmy Holway, a sophomore swimmer at Florida State, recently won the bonus consolation final in the 100 yard freestyle to claim 17th place at the recent ACC C h a m p i o n s h i p s with a time of 45.52.

Katie Dollinger, a freshman at Rice University, competed recently in two events the Conference USA Track and Field Championship in Houston.

Dollinger was 20th in the weight throw (40 feet, 7.75 inches) and was 21st in the shot put (36-5).

Rice won the C-USA women's title for the first time in school history.

Kim Tryon, a freshman at Rhodes College, began her outdoor track season last week.

In her final indoor meet, at the Sewanee Invitational, Tryon jumped 9-6 in the pole vault and was sixth in the triple jump (34-8), and third in the 55 meter hurdles (9.24 seconds). Both the hurdles and triple jump are personal bests for Tryon.

Lynn Dettenwanger, a junior at Missouri Valley College, recently competed at the NAIA Indoor Track & Field Championships in Johnson City, Tenn.

Dettenwanger was fifth in her flight in the long jump (17-9), missing out on placing by less than a foot. She was also seventh in her flight in the triple jump (36-.75), missing placing by two and a half feet.

At last month's Heart of America Athletic Conference's Indoor Track & Field Championships, Dettenwager was fifth in the 55 meter dash (7.36), fourth in the long jump (5.48m) and second in the triple jump (11.32m). Missouri Valley finished sixth in the team standings, with Dettenwanger scoring 17 of their 59 points.

Phillip Bell, a 2004 GBHS grad, went 2- for-5 and scored a run for Alabama- Birmingham in their 10-3 win over Kennesaw State Friday and had a hit, an RBI and a run scored in a 4-3 loss Saturday.

Bell is fourth on the Blazers with a .312 average with one homer and nine RBIs. He hasn't made an error in the field this season.

UWF's Kyle Brown, a 2006 GBHS grad, went 2-for-3 in a 9-2 loss to Montevallo on Saturday. Brown's hitting .244 with three RBIs in 20 games for the Argos (22-9).

Logan Hundley, a 2003 grad, is batting .235 for UWF in 18 games. He has four doubles and two RBIs.
