LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
City should exercise financial responsibility

The March 1 issue of the Gulf Breeze News contained information that the Gulf Breeze City Council has approved a $7.5 million bond issue to finance various projects. The mayor is quoted as saying, "We have gotten ourselves into a situation where we need to do some financing to get us through this period of time…"

The question must be asked why "at this period of time" the city council voted to pursue a number of projects which the city could not afford. Some of the items to be covered by the bond could have been postponed. We taxpayers will be saddled with an annual payment of up to $600,000 in interest alone. One would hope that the city council would exercise financial responsibility in the future by pursuing only projects which we can afford.
