S'mores !

Last weekend, we headed to our river house for a weekend in the country. We call it the Palace on the Perdido! We invited our friends Perrie Kay and Jerry Edgar. Perrie K., the former Ms. Renfroe, was the lady you remember that invited us to live with her after Dennis took our home for the second time in 10 months. The weather was beautiful, the Perdido was full of rednecks and spring had sprung. We had a lovely afternoon in the Adirondack chairs, complete with surf and turf, drinks and conversation that had our sides hurting within the hour. They are friends that we laugh a lot with!

After the sun went down, we lit a fire in the outside fireplace and had a few more drinks. After we had a few more drinks it was time for "S'mores!" Now if you don't know what "s'mores" are, you ain't never been camping. It is actually a combination of the words, "some more"…as in "you want some more? S'mores, get it? This concoction is national camping desert that is easy to fix, quick and tasty. Ahhh, but not when Perrie and 'Lishous get together. Perrie is a true Southern Bell, a real "Steel Magnolia" who is a classy lady that would slap a bull in the mouth if the bull deserved it.

She is not "prissy," but knows jewelry salesmen by their first names! Perrie was a Girl Scout, and learned how to make s'mores with local Troop 300 and actually has a merit badge for "Table Setting!"

Tarsha, aka 'Lishous, on the other hand, actually had "Redneck Woman" as the ring tone on her cell phone for years, until I took it off while she was sleeping one night. You will rarely find her without a ball cap on, drives a pick up truck and the only jewelry she has on was given to her! She is from as far North as you can get, the beautiful state of Maine, and can drink a sailor under the table if necessary! She is a converted Yankee, that ain't never going back and now talks like she was born here! Tarsha was a "Pioneer Girl" and can still sing the song. Pioneer Girls can whip a Girl Scout's butt in six seconds, according to her.

When it came time to make the s'mores, Perrie came to the campfire with aluminum foil that had the graham cracker, Hershey Chocolate and marshmallows all neatly wrapped up for melting together. She set them by the fire to slowly come to the perfect desert. Tarsha asked her, "What the hell is that?" Perrie K, said "S'mores!" Lishous couldn't believe it. She said, "That's the dumbest thing I ever saw, that ain't how you make s'mores!" Jerry chimed in and said, "Everything she cooks is gourmet, even s'mores!" Lishous said, "Let me show you how Pioneer Girls make s'mores"! She went to the nearest tree, ripped off a small limb, stuck two marshmallows on it, and after they caught on fire, she waved the flaming hunks of fire around her head to extinguish the flames, slapped them on a graham cracker with a slab of chocolate, mashed them together and said to Jerry, "here, eat this!" He did and promptly exclaimed how great it tasted! He said, "It must be the black burnt marshmallow taste that makes it different!" I had another drink, for I could see the coming s'more war on the horizon! While Perrie's tin foil s'mores were slowly melting, Tarsha made 16 smores, took some to the neighbors, fed old Rolex six, without the chocolate of course, and put up 17 dozen for the next hurricane season! All the while waving the flaming molten marshmallows over her head

like a wild Indian on the warpath. She looked as if she was trying to summon the ancient S'more God from the grave to prove that she was the S'more Goddess of all time. An hour later, Perrie's s'mores were ready and when we opened one of the tin treasures, she asked if anyone wanted one. Well, Jerry and Tarsha were already in S'more withdrawal, and Rolex was eating a dead toad trying to get the taste out of his mouth. I tried one and told everyone how great it tasted and Jerry said out loud, "you are just being nice because Perrie made them!"

While there was some truth in that, I went inside and got Jerry a pillow because I knew he was going to be spending the night outside in that chair he was sitting in! To tell the truth, both were very good, it was the method used to achieve the goal that was glorious to behold. One was quick and one was an outdoor baking experience. It was the Girl Scouts vs. the Pioneer Girls, and I'm not sure who won, I just enjoyed the war. It was a fun war between two cultures that have come together to make us all friends.

Here's to S'mores, may they forever be enjoyed among folks that love getting together and loving on each other!

Just thought you'd like to know…..
