Students still learning from Hurricane book experience
By Betty Archer Allen

The Education Department of the Santa Rosa Woman's Club was responsible for the March program. The department includes Shari Fulford, Chairman; Rose Jenkins, Co- Chairman; and members Nan McLendon, Aleta McElwain, Sherry McReynolds, Marie Boykin, Wendy Brandon, Millie Dehn, Cathy Sharp and Pat Worsnop.

The program was "Hurricanes & Kids" presented by Shelly Mann, Kale Jarvis and Cole Brown. Mrs. Mann is a fourth grade teacher at Gulf Breeze Elementary who tells the story of how the book "When the Hurricane Blew" was written. Kale Jarvis is a fifth grader who served as the public Service announcer for Hurricanes & Kids on Cox Cable last year and Cole Brown is a fourth grader who will do the public service announcement on Cox Cable this year. Kale and Cole demonstrated their delivery of the public announcement with poise and self assurance. And why wouldn't they? They are Shari Fulford's grandsons!

Shelly Mann and her 2004 fourth grade class, affectionately known as Mann's Miracles, from Gulf Breeze Elementary created the book "When the Hurricane Blew" that was selected for national publication. It was written as a class project to journal memories of Hurricane Ivan which devastated Gulf Breeze in September of 2004. It became widely recognized as an important tool for helping children deal with hurricanes and has been featured on CNN and many other media outlets.

Shelly Mann, a fourth grade teacher at Gulf Breeze Elementary, is shown with cousins Kale Jarvis, left, and Cole Brown, who do public service announcements on Cox Cable.
The book, created by hurricane kids for hurricane kids, offers a heartwarming story to help kids understand what is happening around them. It offers tips from kids who have been there and a collection of games kids can enjoy while in the car evacuating, while without electrical power, or while displaced after the storm. Whenever a hurricane threatens a community, the parents and grandparents get very busy with hurricane preparations. Kids are often fearful and have their own hurricane preparations to make. That's where this book can help.

Mann's Miracles formed a non-profit corporation, Hurricane Kids Network, Inc. (HKN), and each child is a voting member of the all-kid Board of Directors (BOD). The BOD has voted to donate royalties to hurricane affected kids everywhere. HKN can be found on the Web at www.hurricanekidsnetwork. org.

The program was very interesting as well as inspirational. The Education Department can take a lot of pride in the work they have accomplished this year.

Gulf Breeze Arts, Inc

Gulf Breeze Arts, Inc. has installed a new show of members' art at the Gulf Breeze Library, 1060 Shoreline Drive. The art will be on exhibit during the months of March, April and part of May. The artists who are featured in this show are: Janet Lopicolo, Jan Kurtz, Rosa Mize, and Jane Nowlin. Most of the work displayed is for sale. As you tour the library you eyes are drawn to the paintings that adorn the library walls. The Gulf Breeze Arts Association provides these paintings and changes them out every few months. For information about the show or Gulf Breeze Arts, organization, contact Annette Brinkman at 932-0125

Gulf Breeze Rotary

Rotarians are going strong, continuing to grow and continuing to do good things for the community. They would like to remind the community of the GB Rotary Golf Tournament that will be held on Friday April 20th and the membership of the Spring Social on Tuesday March 27th at the Cultural Center downtown.

The March 3 meeting highlighted the Group Study Exchange program from Australia. Dianna Reed is the Rotarian from Perth, Australia who is escorting these 5 interesting young men and women from Australia around Florida. The five individuals included David Jurac, Jennifer Scott, Nathan Ritchie, Rachelle Lewis, and Anouska South. They presented an interesting slide show on their background and dispelled myths about Australia. Both were very good programs.
