Hubert M. Weed
May 14, 1914 - March 10, 2007

Weed
Hubert Manning Weed of Gulf Breeze was born on May 29, 1914 in Cordele, Ga. and on March 10, 2007 he passed away in his sleep of natural causes. He is preceded in death by his wife Mary Boling Weed, his brother Alton Carswell Weed, and his sister Florence Weed Pape. He is survived by his children Pamela Vaughan (Bobby) of Union, SC; Beverly Weed of Union, SC; David Weed (Sharon) of Millersivlle, Md.; Kenneth Weed (Judy) of Tallassee, Ala.; and Patricia Droogsma (Mike) of Gulf Breeze, Fla.; his brother-in-law Clarence Pape of Gulf Breeze; grandchildren Jeffrey Vaughan (Laura); Jamie, Austin and Jessie Droogsma of Gulf Breeze Fla., Christopher, Scott and Jenny Weed; and step-grandchildren Joshua and Tabatha Mallory. Mr. Weed was laid to rest in Union, SC beside his wife Mary.

After a few years in GA, Mr. Weed and his siblings were raised in Slocum, Ala. After high school he made his way to Pensacola. He worked various jobs until being hired in 1934 to work with NARF at Pensacola's NAS. He also worked part time at Waters and Hibbert Funeral Home. Years later he met and married Mary, an RN with Sacred Heart Hospital and over the next 15 years had 5 children. In July of 1969 they bought their house on Fairpoint Drive so Mary could take over and run the child care center that operated out of the bottom of the house. When she died in 1973, Mr. Weed retired to take care of the last two of the five children still at home. He kept busy by working for Gulf Breeze Flowers, attending sporting activities at the ball park and GBHS, taking classes at PJC, doing water aerobics, and growing azaleas. After the children were gone he began driving for AVIS.

Many may remember Mr. Weed as the tall white haired man on Fairpoint; with his "Plant Sale" sign out and his driveway lined with plants. Others may remember seeing the older gentleman sitting just out of the sun in his garage watching the traffic and waving at passersby. He wasn't great with names but he rarely forgot a face and enjoyed running into people he knew at the grocery store.

For the past 18 months, Mr. Weed has been in Union, SC where his two older daughters could help with his care. After a good family Christmas this past December, Mr. Weed's health began to decline more rapidly.

Mr. Weed enjoyed being a part of Gulf Breeze and the many people with whom he came into contact. He was friendly, if not flirtatious to many, and kind and helpful to all. It brings the family great comfort to know their father touched so many lives in his 92 years and that scattered all around Gulf Breeze are people and plants for which he cared.
