Talking books offered free for eligible Florida residents

Does someone you know have trouble reading print due to a visual, physical, or reading disability? If so, a free service from the Florida Division of Blind Services, Bureau of Braille and Talking Book Library Services can help!

"Talking Books" are books and magazines on cassette that play on special equipment. Descriptive videos and DVDs are also available free of charge. All materials and equipment are loaned free and mailed to and from your home free. Mailed cards come with each item to be returned postage-free.

Individuals are eligible to use the Talking Book Program if they

Need large type print

Have trouble reading standard print because of an eye problem, macular degeneration, learning or reading disability

Have difficulty holding a book due to a medical condition such as arthritis, stroke, or an accident.

The Bureau serves more than 39,000 Florida residents who cannot use standard print reading materials. It is the largest library of its kind in the U.S., with a collection of more than 2.4 million items in Braille or on cassette, and annual loans exceeding 1.6 million items. The collection contains recorded books for all ages including bestsellers, biographies, romances, mysteries, and much more. Participants also have access to more than 80 recorded magazines, such as People, Martha Stewart Living, Florida Sportsman, and U.S. News & World Report.

Friends of the Gulf Breeze Library will be holding a book sale at Gulf Breeze Library on Saturday, March 17 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Choose from a variety of items including cookbooks, fiction, romance, mystery, nonfiction/self-help, children's, videos, audiobooks, textbooks, and more! Most items are under $2. Proceeds will benefit the Gulf Breeze Library.
