Scouts satisfy need for speed at Pinewood Derby
BY LISA NEWELL Gulf Breeze News lisa@gulfbreezenews.com

Submitted Photo Cub Scout Pack 11 Overall Pinewood Derby champions from left, Zachary Argentine, second place; Joshua Argentine, third place; and Jamison Sanders, first place. Sanders went on to win third place at regionals.
Formerly just blocks of wood sanded with love by scouts and their parents, Pinewood Derby cars took to the racetrack on Feb. 3 at St. Ann Catholic Church's Community Center.

Some were painted, some emblazoned with decals and all of the cars were crafted to win their categories.

In the end, three winners: Jamison Sanders, 7, in first place followed by brothers Zack and Josh Argentine, both 10, in second and third place.

Jamison's dad, Eddie, explained that he and Jamison built four cars and did their own time trials in their back yard.

Originally shooting to win the "Scouts Choice" title, the pair realized they had a car that could possibly win the race, so they decided to enter that car in the derby.

Jamison's car won its division, then kept beating other division winners until it came out on top of the race, winning the opportunity to advance to the regional competition, where his car took third place from among almost 300 competitors.
