Lady Dolphins maul Cats for 16th consecutive district crown
The win marked the 16th consecutive district title for the Lady Dolphins (18-4-3), who will host Arnold in a Region 1- 4A quarterfinal match tonight at 7 p.m. Gulf Breeze defeated Arnold 4-0 in the regional quarterfinals a year ago. "I like rotating a lot of numbers into the match. It was a total team effort tonight," coach Eric Miles said. "The goals we scored were awesome. I'm so proud of them." The Lady Cats (17-4-3) had the better of the possession in the opening minutes with two corner kicks, but neither resulted in a shot on goal. After Aubrey Curington fired a shot to the right of the goal in the fourth minute, she put one in the back of the net for the game's first score. A pass from Kim Begley was run on by Maggie Rodgers. The freshman forward had her breakaway broken up by the Wildcat keeper, but Curington was there far post to put away the empty netter in the seventh minute. Rodgers was poised for a goal a few minutes later, but a late offsides call nullified the chance. Noelle Robles also had a good scoring chance in the 20th minute, but the high arcing shot went over the crossbar. Washington's Lindsey Williams, who has already commited to the University of Florida, played about 25 minutes of the first half, but was hampered by a bad ankle. Bianca Takacs drove down the left side in the 37th minute. She sent in a high arcing cross that Cayla Platt plucked out the air and one-timed in into the back of the net for a 2-0 lead. Kathy Franklin came off her line to make a save in the 38th minute, one of seven she made in the first half. Annie Preston played the second half in goal. Preston was staked to a 3-0 lead in the 54th minute when Robles sent a high arcing shot from the left side off the right post and in. Alyssa Smith was credited with the assist. Takacs was brought down in the penalty area in the 60th minute, resulting in a PK goal for Ashley Schermerhorn in the 60th minute. The goal was her first of the season. Robles'11th goal of the season - and second of the game - came in the 62nd minute when she put away a long clear by Preston. GBHS had 22 shots in the game, with 12 of them on goal. Lady Dolphins 4, Navarre 0 Four different players found the back of the net as the Lady Dolphins clinched a playoff berth Thursday over fourthseeded Navarre. A hand ball just a couple of yards outside the penalty area set up the game's first goal in the second minute. Begley set the high arcing shot off the right post and in for a 1-0 lead. It was the team-leading 20th goal of the season for Begley. Robles was credited with her team-leading 21st assist. Four minutes later, Gulf Breeze found the net again. Takacs sent a ball in from the right side that Curington put away for a 2-0 lead. Smith, who had only three goals in the regular season, scored her fourth of the postseason in the 22nd minute. Begley fed the ball to Smith, whose shot off the keeper's hands made it 3-0. Jessica Majewski's 14th goal of the season rounded out the scoring in the 46th minute. Rodgers' 15th assist of the season was one-touched near post by Majewski. Preston made three saves in the first half, while Franklin played 29 minutes of the second half. Lauren Davis, making her varsity debut, had a save in the final nine minutes. Lady Dolphins 8, Pine Forest 0 (51 minutes) Begley had four goals, while Smith had three in a win over Pine Forest in the quarterfinals Jan. 16. Rodgers had four assists, setting up two of Begley's and Smith's goals. Robles also had a goal and two assists, setting up Begley's other two goals. Begley had assists on Rodgers' other two goals. Gulf Breeze led 4-0 at the half. |
