Pensacola Camellia Society Judge Roger Vinson has been elected secretary of the American Camellia Society (ACS) headquartered in Fort Valley, Ga. According to Ann Walton, executive secretary of the ACS, Vinson will serve in that post and as a trustee of the ACS Foundation. Walton said, "We are pleased to have a person with his personal charm and legal expertise to help guide our organization." Vinson has been an integral part of the Pensacola Camellia Club including President, show chair and trustee for the Club's Endowment Fund. Vinson became acquainted with Pensacola as a Navy pilot. He said, "When I came to live in Pensacola in 1971, I had no idea what a camellia was and certainly no idea of the different species and varieties. I had yet to realize that Pensacola has nearly perfect growing conditions with plentiful rainfall, mild winters, sandy and slightly acid soil. I soon realized that growing camellias was easier than growing roses. I met several of the men who had long been a part of the Pensacola Camellia Club including the now legendary Johnny Edwards, and I caught their enthusiasm for the camellias. There's always something new to be discovered, and the idea of having plants bloom in midwinter is always refreshing. Anyone with a yard in Pensacola should have at least one or two camellia plants. It's part of the Pensacola lifestyle." Gulf Breeze Rotary Club On January 9 Brett Berg presented a program on the new exhibit coming to the Gulf Coast Exploreum in Mobile, "A Day in Pompeii." Brett told the story about the exhibit and a little bit about the city of Pompeii and what it was like in 79 A.D. when it was destroyed by an eruption of Mt. Vesuvius. For those seeking more information you can go to the website at www.exploreum.net or call 877- 625-4FUN. The exhibit will be in Mobile from Jan 12-June 3 and would make a great day trip for the family or visitors.
