Weekly Best Bets
8:31 p.m. on NBC 30 Rock: Liz (Tina Fey) likes smart guys; Jenna (Jane Krakowski) likes hot guys. But when they decide to pursue a pair of gents from MSNBC - one nerdy, the other handsome - guess which one Liz falls for. Yep, the hot one. Maybe it has something to do with "Bottoms Up Day," a role-reversal exercise that has Jack (Alec Baldwin) playing page and Kenneth (Jack McBrayer) walking in Jack's wingtips in the new episode "The Head and the Hair." 9:01 p.m. on ABC Men in Trees: There's no cure for heartbreak and writer's block like sorting through other people's old stuff. In the new episode "History Lessons," Marin (Anne Heche) volunteers to help with the town rummage sale in an effort to take her mind off Jack (James Tupper) and her inability to write. Friday 7:15 p.m. on MAX The Lost Boys: This 1987 vampire tale stands out from the pack by not taking itself too seriously. A single mom (Dianne Wiest) relocates her sons (Jason Patric, Corey Haim) to a new town where the elder boy falls in with the wrong crowd to the extreme, befriending some teen bloodsuckers. 8 p.m. on NBC Las Vegas: Who's top dog? Ed, Danny and Mike (James Caan, Josh Duhamel, James Lesure) get competitive in the new episode "Wagers of Sin," as they bet on which of them is the casino's best security operator and who can find the most waste. Mary (Nikki Cox) hires recording artist John Legend for a special performance. Saturday 7 p.m. on ABC Seabiscuit: Adapted from Laura Hillenbrand's bestseller, this nostalgic Oscar-nominated 2003 drama stirringly retells the true story of a Depression-era racehorse that defied all odds. Tobey Maguire gives a fully committed and physically taxing performance as Red Pollard, a former prizefighter who becomes an unlikely jockey. 10:30 p.m. on FOX Mad TV: And you thought Bae Sung (Bobby Lee) was gone for good after getting literally flushed away in season 11. Like Kenny on "South Park," the hapless translator whose first language appears to be gibberish, has returned from the dead, "uhoh, hot dog" catchphrase and all. Sunday 2 p.m. on FOX NFLFootball: Before its final destination in Miami on Feb. 4, the road to Super Bowl XLI winds through two more cities today to determine the conference champions. The first stop is on Fox for the NFC Championship game, with the call provided by Joe Buck and Troy Aikman. 7 p.m. on FOX The Simpsons: Moe's at it again! When Lisa writes a school report about the barkeep, she discovers he has a poetic side and helps him become a published poet. He becomes quite the success, and guess whom he forgets to give credit to. Lisa shouldn't be surprised; remember the time Homer invented that drink, and Moe claimed credit for it? Monday 8 p.m. on CBS Two and a Half Men: Time to move that kid down the hall. Jake (Angus T. Jones) tells Alan and Charlie (Jon Cryer, Charlie Sheen) that he can hear his mom and Herb (Ryan Stiles) having sex. It's not the usual sounds, however; she's giving him directions. And you thought men couldn't ask for those. 8 p.m. on NBC Heroes: Sorry, Doc, they've already got a time traveler. There's a new hero in town, played by "Doctor Who" alumnus Christopher Eccleston, as the hit series returns from hiatus. His entrance won't be subtle, but what event on this show is? Nathan (Adrian Pasdar) seeks Simone's (Tawny Cypress) help to save Peter (Milo Ventimiglia). Tuesday 8 p.m. on ABC CBS State of the Union: You have plenty of choices, so feel free to watch President George W. Bush's annual address on the channel whose afterspeech commentators you prefer. And let's face it: These speeches are pretty predictable, no matter who's giving them. 9 p.m. on A&E Dog: The Family Speaks: Bad Dog! Well, maybe not, but the Mexican authorities aren't happy with the behavior of flamboyant bounty hunter Duane "Dog" Chapman and his posse. In September, Dog, son Leland and associate Tim Chapman were arrested for collaring cosmetics heir and convicted rapist Andrew Luster south of the border, where bounty hunting is illegal. In this special, Chapman family members tell their side of the story. Wednesday 7 p.m. on ABC George Lopez: Welcome back, George! The underrated but reliable sitcom about a middle-class Hispanic family in Los Angeles is back - better late in the season than never. In the season premiere, George (George Lopez) wrestles with something anyone who's seen the show before will recognize: deep-seated mommy issues. 8 p.m. on PBS
Great Performances at the Met: Mozart would love it. The first installment in a new series that brings the Metropolitan Opera's famed Saturday afternoon broadcasts to the screen, this production of "The Magic Flute" is directed by Julie Taymor, who did "The Lion King" on Broadway. That means a feast for both eyes and ears. |
