Navarre Garden Club The Navarre Garden Club is hosting a Trio of Arbor Day Festivities. The club has lined up several events to mark Arbor Day 2007 for our community. These events include: Thursday, January 18, a tree planting sponsored by the Navarre Junior Garden Club at West Navarre Intermediate School, will mark the beginning of the Arbor Day events and the winners of the Arbor Day Tree Poster Contest will be announced. Following the tree planting at the school, each junior garden club member will receive a tree to take home and plant. Friday, January 19, the Navarre Garden Club will be volunteers in Cantonment at the International Paper site, assisting in "bagging" tree seedlings for distribution on Saturday. Trees offered this year include: Leyland Cypress, Flowering Dogwood, Redbud, Red Maple, River Birch, Pindo Palm, Sabal Palm (the Florida State tree), Sweetgum and Pine. Saturday, January 20, the Navarre Garden Club will have a public tree planting at 8 am at Navarre High School with Andrea Santilli and her class. Following this, the Arbor Day Free Tree Giveaway to the public will begin at 8:30 a.m. in the Navarre High School cafeteria. The Garden Club is expecting to have over 6,000 trees for this Arbor Day celebration, but there is a limit of six free trees per family, and trees are given away on a "first come, first serve" basis. "In previous years many people have been disappointed when they arrived late in the day and found that all of the trees had been given away," mentioned Judith Begue, Master Gardener. "So, getting to Navarre High early in the day is recommended. By 11 a.m., we are usually out of trees." The Navarre Garden Club is active in the Navarre community throughout the year and meetings are held the first Tuesday of the month in the Navarre Community Center; all are invited to attend. Paula Lou Maples, Chairman for the FFWC President's Project "Making Dreams Come True Through You" Scholarship Program gave a good talk on this topic. These dreams will be given to young cancer survivors who have often seen their dreams of attending college shattered due to lack of funds. Since many children cancer survivors are unable to attend regular college prep classes during cancer treatment, they may not be eligible for many scholarships or grants. The FFWC President's project will begin by helping these young people acquire an American Cancer Society, Florida Division college scholarship. These scholarship awards are for undergraduate degrees. Young Florida residents who have had a diagnosis of cancer before the age of 21 and are in remission are eligible to apply for this program. Scholarships are worth a maximum of $2,300 per year and are renewable up to five years. To be eligible students must have experienced a personal diagnosis of cancer, be under the age of 21 at application, demonstrate Florida residency and plan to attend college in Florida.
